The Ports of the "Nigerian" Hinterland

This area of research examines the "Nigerian" hinterland ports in comparative perspective, incorporating parallel work on ports involved in the slave trade in Europe and the Americas. The extent to which Ouidah, Bonny, Old Calabar, Lagos, and other ports were incorporated into the Atlantic economy is a principal focus of research. The project also considers linkages and movements of persons among the ports in Africa and elsewhere on the Atlantic rim. Special attention will be given to the identification and collection of geographically dispersed source material, and to the possibility of establishing concentrated deposits and /or publication of relevant material.
