OBW Summer Research Program 2010
Funded Summer Research Opportunities in Germany for Students
in Science, Engineering, and Health Sciences
Revised application deadline: January 29, 2010
The Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Student Exchange Program offers Summer Research Scholarships to Ontario graduate and undergraduate students in science, engineering, and health science disciplines.
The scholarships (up to 10 in number) provide students the opportunity to spend between 2 and 4 months in summer 2010 at a university in Baden-Württemberg (southwest Germany) engaged in research projects relevant to their studies in Ontario.
Using funds provided by Ontario’s Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, the Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Student Exchange Program (OBW) will award each selected participant a partial scholarship of between $3,000 and $4,000 (depending on length of stay). Nominating professors and nominated students are encouraged to seek further financial assistance at their own universities.
Students must be nominated by a professor at their home university who has academic contacts with a university researcher in their own discipline at a university in Baden-Württemberg. Each applicant must provide a letter from a researcher at the proposed host university stating a willingness to involve the student in an ongoing, relevant research project in a meaningful capacity for a specified period of time between 2 months (minimum) and 4 months (maximum). (In the absence of a prior connection between faculty members, the OBW Program will endeavour to identify a suitable host professor at a university in Baden-Württemberg and initiate contact with him/her, but preference will be given to applicants who have identified a host professor.)
Appropriate academic credit may be granted for this work at the discretion of the student’s home university.
Knowledge of German is not required for participation, so long as the receiving professor is aware of the level of the nominee’s language skills and agrees to host the student. Some knowledge of German would of course enhance the student’s experience.
The International Office of the hosting university will do its best to help the Ontario researcher find accommodation in student residences, but such accommodation cannot be guaranteed. Applicants or their professors should enquire with the hosting professor/department about any other possibilities.
Students may not participate more than once at a given level of their studies. Preference will be given to applicants who have not participated previously. There are nine publicly-funded, research-intensive universities in Baden-Württemberg:
- Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg
- Rupprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg
- Universität Hohenheim
- Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
- Universität Konstanz
- Universität Mannheim
- Universität Stuttgart
- Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen
- Universität Ulm
Following their research stay, participants are required to submit a report to the OBW Program on their activities and experiences in Baden-Württemberg.
Nomination Process
Complete nominations should be submitted by the nominating professor to the International Exchange Office of his/her own University.
The nomination should consist of (one original and two photocopies of the following documents):
- A letter of nomination from a professor in the student’s home academic unit outlining briefly the relevance of the visit for the student’s program of study, the reasons for nominating the student, and, if appropriate, the kind of credit the student might receive for the work done in Germany.
- A letter (or printout of an e-mail) from the professor at a Baden-Württemberg university stating a willingness to host the student in a research project. This letter should indicate the precise duration of the research visit and outline the activities in which the student will be engaged.
- The application form, completed and signed by the nominee.
- A brief statement (maximum 1 page) written by the student describing the reasons (academic and personal) for wishing to participate in this program.
- Copies of academic transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended in the period since September 2007.
The complete nominations, accompanied by a ranked list of each Ontario university’s candidates, should be forwarded by the nominee’s home university’s International Exchange Office to the OBW Student Exchange Program by December 15, 2009
