Second
and Third Years ("Upper Years") Description
In
the second and third years of the program, the courses are entirely
optional, subject to the following guidelines: students must take
a minimum of 60 credit hours over second and third years; take between
13 and 17 credit hours each term; may not take more than two seminars
per term; and in either second or third year, all students must successfully
complete a seminar, course or other option satisfying the Upper Year
Research and Writing Requirement.
Students are, therefore, able to design a course of study especially
suited to their own particular interest and career aspirations. One
of the advantages which comes from being the largest common-law law
school in the country is that we have faculty resources to develop
an extremely comprehensive range of courses and seminars for second
and third-year students. As well, our location in the city of Toronto
enables us to attract adjunct faculty members who are among the finest
practitioners in the country. The tremendous growth and development
of our curriculum over the last 30 years is a process that continues
and reflects the diverse interests of our full-time and adjunct faculty
and represents an attempt to enrich the study of law in a variety
of ways.
Second and third year students have an opportunity to take part in
intensive programs and a clinical legal education curriculum. These
programs permit students to engage in real or simulated lawyering
roles as part of their course of study. As well, students have the
option to participate in three new curricular streams or to engage
in specific directed research programs.
