Course description:

This course surveys the field of language contact, with focus on the linguistic consequences of contact and relevant applied issues. Topics covered in the course include: societal and individual bilingualism; language maintenance and shift; language planning and education; language death; code switching and borrowing; and pidgins and creoles.  Students develop skills necessary for graduate-level research, including library research, proper citation, critical reading, presentation and academic writing.
