Transcription
project
You will be expected to record and transcribe
a sequence of spoken interaction of about 20 minutes or more. The
transcription should be done with a software program that permits the linking
of text and sound (preferably with ELAN, which is pre-installed
on most computers in the MATAL lab). This work is best done in groups of up
to three students. You may want to start thinking right away about what
kind of interaction you would like to (and would be able to) record.
Remember also that recordings will have to follow York approval procedures for research
ethics. Relevant information can be found here. Please take
the ethics tutorial
at your earliest convenience. Due
date: February 17
Transcript
analysis assignments
#1, due March 3
In no more than three pages (including brief
transcription excerpts), analyze aspects of your transcript with respect to
this week's (and last week’s) course readings. Here are some questions that
you could pursue (don't feel like you need to address all of them, they are
just suggestions): How is your understanding of the transcribed interaction
enriched by the concept of adjacency pair or by a close application of the
participation framework (e.g. in multi-party discourse, how do participant
roles change). What kind of repairs are there, if any? What kind of
questions? Is there a closing sequence?
#2, due March 10
In about three pages (including brief
transcription excerpts), analyze aspects of your transcript with respect to
this week's course readings (especially Schiffrin). Here are some questions
that you could pursue (don't feel like you need to address all of them,
they are just suggestions): What kind of discourse markers do speakers
employ, for what ends? Are there differences between speakers with regard
to the use of discourse markers? How do you interpret your findings?
