English 1001A (F): Major Research Assignment

Assigned: Week 5 (Oct 10)
Due Date: Week 11 before your tutorial
Length: 2000 words

The Task

Each TA will assign their tutorial a different episode or scene from As You Like It. Your task is to write an analysis of that scene with a few considerations in mind. You are free to structure/organize your response as you see fit, but bear in mind you will also be evaluated on the logical transparency and thoroughness of your argument.

Look to the content of the particular scene--its theme, characterization, structure, and movement, but also pay attention to language. If more than one character appears in the scene, look for differences in language use, according to each character. Extend your analysis to include something of the immediate dramatic context in which your assigned scene is situated. Show something of how this scene reflects, reproduces and/or deconstructs other similar scenes/episodes/issues in the play as a whole. You must extend your dramatic analysis to include a discussion of one or two cinematic or theatrical dramatizations of that scene. Use the terms mentioned in Some Cinematic Terms and if appropriate, in Narratology terms. Your tutorial leader will inform you of your specific cinematic/theatrical options.

Finally, you must make use of at least two critical (refereed) items in your paper; these could be books or articles. This requirement is not intended to be an onerous task; it simply means that at least twice in your paper, you must quote and paraphrase from peer-reviewed sources. What you decide to quote can emerge from critical discussions of the play, or cinematic or theatrical production, as a whole, or from the particular scene you are exploring. Just make the explicit connection; it is important to learn how to contextualize your own thoughts with those of other critics.

Be textually specific in your use of evidence and be thoughtful in your selection and treatment of secondary sources. Formatting and Works Cited should follow MLA 2009.
