Active on a broad range of research topics in boundary-layer meteorology
and air-sea interaction. Background in Applied Mathematics, Physical Oceanography
and Atmospheric Science. Has worked on numerical modelling, wind tunnel
and field experiments. Presently co-editor of the journal, Boundary-Layer
Meteorology. Specific topics are:
Atmospheric boundary-layer modelling. Fundamental studies, flow over hills
and other terrain complexities, aeolian transport of dust, sand and, especially, snow. Modelling
the Martian boundary layer.
Land surface processes. Modelling (with Canadian Land Surface Scheme) of
impacts of snow cover on surface energy budgets.
Field studies of drifting and blowing snow. Transport and sublimation rate issues.
Lake breezes and their impact on severe weather (flash floods, tornadoes etc) in SW Ontario.
Field studies (ELBOW 2001) and mesoscale modelling.
Air-Sea interaction, especially airflow over water waves, momentum and mass transfer issues.
Wind energy. Wind turbine site selection.
Air quality issues - impacts of lake-breeze circulations on air quality.
It is my practice to put students, research fellows and research associates as first
author on most papers. In most cases however I am closely involved in the research and in the
writing of the papers. My role has been relatively minor in some papers but I can legitimately claim to be
a major contributor to both the research and writing of most of the other journal papers listed.
