President: Jim Bob President: Rashmi Kumar Hey! My name is Rashmi Kumar and I'm running for President. I have over 5 yrs of experience working for non-profit associations, which has given me considerable knowledge regarding organization operations. My main focus as President will be to make the law school application process a lot less stressful! I want to arrange for workshops with the Career Centre and other organizations to learn how to complete the law school application and even choose between schools! If elected I will continue bi-weekly mock LSATS and ensure consistent room bookings to make the process run a lot smoother. And to increase participation, I will ensure that the mock LSATS do no conflict with 3rd/4th year Crim/Law&Society class schedules. Lastly, with the VP, I will gain more sponsors to provide more affordable prep courses to our members, while continuing to make PLSY an outgoing and social organization! Natasha Beitman I'm Natasha Beitman, and I've been Sponsorship Coordinator for Pre-law for a year. Since I came to York, I've become engaged in the vibrant community, as a part of Moot Society, Debate Team, Habitat for Humanity and Pre-Law. Because of these clubs, I've had the privilege to make connections with lawyers, judges and Osgoode professors, and I have realized that a Mentorship Program between Undergraduates interested in law, Osgoode students, professors, lawyers and judges would be an asset to pre-law members. Each member would have a connection to a law student and a lawyer with whom to talk to, meet up with, and use as a resource for work and advice in the future. A vote for me will mean a vote for a stronger Pre-Law, featuring the events I have helped run this year, such as Mock LSATs and Law Panels, and for a brand new Law Mentorship Program! Chris Karopolous Serving as Vice President this past year, as well as Promotions Coordinator the year before, has allowed me to gain invaluable insight into the inner workings of the Pre-Law Society and the necessary elements that go into its successful maintenance. Over the past two years, I have cultivated close relationships with Bay Street lawyers, top-ranking LSAT tutors, and current law students that I am determined to capitalize on through law firm visits, networking & mentoring events, law school application workshops, and LSAT tutoring sessions. I have also collaborated with passionate executives of several York, Ryerson, and U of T clubs, securing partnerships that will improve funding and offer an even greater array of unique event opportunities. Having received expert guidance necessary to achieve success in this journey to law school, the position of President will allow me assist proactive students in acquiring that selfsame goal of surpassing the competition. Nathan Saprikin Hello everyone! My name is Nathan and I am a strong proponent of discourse, meaning that I believe for us to get the optimal benefit from PLSY we must mutually engage in active discussions. I'm certain that I'm not the only one, but my participation in PLSY has left me with a head full of ideas and a mouth full of words, but no sets of ears to listen. So if you feel the same way, grant me this opportunity to represent you as my peers and I will ensure you get the chance to be heard! I hope to implement a Ôpanel' for PLSY members where you will be able to take the floor, express yourselves and discover like-minded people! I will further continue to deliver the PLSY events you enjoy and use my resources in Osgoode Hall and other York student groups to provide a holistic Pre-Law experience! Yonathan Kramer In this position I plan to provide you, the members of Pre-Law more opportunities of acquiring the information necessary to guide you on your path to Law School. These additions consist of making more information available online for members. Knowing how tough the undergraduate schedule can be it is often difficult to find time in your schedule to attend events. Therefore online information will offer the convenience of still being able to access necessary information. I would also set up an online Q&A section where all members can post any questions Pre-Law related and have it answered by someone qualified to do so. Finally I would give members more choice and say over when mock LSAT's are administered. The goal is not to replace anything rather it is to add in order to accommodate more members. Vice-President: Rashmi Kumar Hey! My name is Rashmi Kumar and I am running for VP. In addition to the platform outlined for my president candidacy, if elected I aim to work with the other execs to further the outreach of PLSY by engaging 1st and 2nd year students. I would like to see more tabling, more events, and more workshops (in partnership with other groups and the Career Centre) to promote our fantastic organization! I would also like to arrange a "Buddy Program" with Osgoode law students to provide mentorships between PLSY members and actually JD candidates! My experience working with multiple organizations over the years has given me the immense skills that I would LOVE to utilize within PLSY! I look forward to working with you all in September!! Elgin Taing Hey everyone! My name is Elgin Taing and I am a 2nd year BBA student specializing in accounting. I have attended several events hosted by the PLSY this year and without a doubt they have been extremely valuable in terms of allowing me to gain insights into the legal field. Having been a member of both the Pre-Law Society and the Schulich Business Law Association, I've felt that attendance to events held by each club were not as optimal as they could be. Thus, I would like to propose a partnership between the clubs so that members can have access to all the valuable events that will help you gain a better understanding of the legal field. For PLSY members, this means access to new opportunities like law firm visits to Fasken Martineau and Davies where you can have an intimate networking/ lunch session with articling students and firm personnel. Dear Members,
Dear members, Dear members,
PLEASE SEND ALL VOTES TO plsyvote@gmail.com, IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT: Your name, student number President: Your choice VP: Your choice Treasurer: Your choice Keep in mind that candidates can campaign for up to two positions but you may only chose them ONCE. Only registered members may vote. ELECTIONS 2011/2012 Post: PRESIDENT Candidate name: Ana Navabi Campaign paragraph: The varying executive positions I have held at York in the past three years make me a great candidate for the position of presidency as I am familiar with the tasks and responsibilities for each position as well as the goals of the club. I am aware of the availabilities and benefits York offers for its clubs. My most recent experience as the promotions coordinator of the prelaw club has given me insight to the goals and objectives of that club that I can use to better run, maintain, develop and improve the club programs. As the president my first priority will be to run the Mock LSATs during the summer. Secondly, I will begin “personal statement” building workshops. Thirdly I will introduce new opportunities for members to engage in the club. I’ll be living on campus this summer and next year which makes me accessible and available to host summer events and meetings to plan ways of improving the club. I have many new ideas and plans that will bring much success to the overall goals of the club! Post: PRESIDENT Candidate name: Sana Alibux Campaign paragraph: I am writing to submit my candidacy for the President position for the York University Pre-Law society. My interest in this position stems from my desire to participate in broadening our collective understanding of the legal world and to contribute to the growth of our organization. As the President of the Pre-Law society I hope to implement or assist with the following initiatives along with adopting our current mandate: · Organize a trip to the Ontario Human Rights Commission office to get a better understanding of the day to day lives of those working with the commission · Invite guest lecturers to discuss the legal profession · Organize a range of social activities for members · Collaborate with the York Debating Society and York Model United Nations group for debates on legal and social issues · Coordinate mock LSAT review sessions. In sum, I believe I can contribute to the further development of our organization. Post: PRESIDENT Candidate name: Ryan Wardle Campaign paragraph: Hi everyone, I’m Ryan and I am running for President of the Pre Law Society. Over the past year, I have had the privilege of serving as the Sponsorship Coordinator with an experienced executive team, and have been an active member in the club for 2 years. If elected, I will bring a high degree of professionalism, integrity and leadership to this prestigious organization. My credentials include vast experience in attracting corporate sponsorship, overseeing executive budgets, and developing and supervising club events. As an elected executive, I plan to continue to place a strong emphasis on LSAT preparation, specifically offering support for students writing during the June and October sessions. Furthermore, I will seek collaboration with several clubs around the York community, with an intention of expanding opportunities for our members. It would be both an honour and pleasure to work with you all in the upcoming year! Post: VICE PRESIDENT Candidate name: Ana Navabi Campaign paragraph: At times, the Vice president of the club has greater responsibilities than the president. The vice president must ensure that everything in the club is going accordingly to the ways decided by the executives and the members and should anything be lacking, the vice president must identify the issue or problem and formulate solutions. As I have been the vice president of another club at York I am aware and experienced of the potential challenges and difficulties that arise in group settings. I have been responsible for running meetings and assigning task to 12 other executives. I organized many events and had to go through many processes to get funding from York, and book rooms for events through YFS or sign up to run a table through SCLD. I am a leader and my familiar with York policies and opportunities, I would best utilize the availabilities and recourses that are offered. Post: VICE PRESIDENT Candidate name: Ryan Wardle Campaign paragraph: Hi everyone, I’m Ryan and I am also running for Vice President of the Pre Law Society. My experience as the Sponsorship Coordinator this academic year equips me with the tools and experience needed to be an effective Vice President. I would work over the summer to create, develop, and build on events this year generating a more beneficial experience to our members. As an executive team member this year, and an active member for the past two, I have developed a strong understanding of how the Pre Law Society operates. With this knowledge, it would not be a problem for me to assume presidential duties in the absence of the president. My primary objective as the vice president would be to attract new corporate sponsors and develop new and exciting events for our members. I look forward to meeting and working for all of you in the upcoming year! Post: VICE PRESIDENT Candidate name: Roshan Udit Campaign paragraph: My name is Roshan Udit and I am currently a third year student majoring in Criminology. It is my desire to attend law school upon completion of my B.A. I joined PLSY in my second year with hopes of bettering my chance of admittance to law school. Accordingly, this organization has provided me with guidance necessary to achieve success in this journey. I have thus been able to strengthen my social and academic life. With this in mind, I feel that it is my conglomerate to support PLSY members in acquiring the same goal. The position of Vice President will best allow me to do so. A Promise: If elected as Vice President, I assure you with immense confidence that if opportunities are given to me, I will dedicate myself to work towards the betterment of this organization. Post: VICE PRESIDENT Candidate name: Michael Lipson Campaign paragraph: If I were elected, I would like to arrange for prominent lawyers to speak and provide students with advice in many different law categories to give students the chance to get a better feel for what life as a lawyer would entail. I would also like to arrange mock LSAT tests, so members can have a chance to write the test in regular LSAT conditions, as a means of preparations for the big day. Regular meetings, social gatherings, and discussions would also be part of my contribution, as we can simply enjoy the company of our fellow students discussing current trials throughout the world.Lastly, I would like to arrange for current law students to come in regularly and give their tips about how to get into the law school of your choice. If you vote for me, I will do my best to accommodate everyone’s needs and requests. Happy voting! Post: VICE PRESIDENT Candidate name: Alana Chan Campaign paragraph: My name is Alana Chan and I am interested in running for Vice President. I have had previous experience in being a vice president so I have the foundational skills and qualities to ensure a sound performance. I also had experience in planning and organizing events with outstanding results that ensure my skills in being efficient in event management. I am organized, competent, and diligent so there is no doubt in my mind that I can definitely provide and perform to the fullest of my abilities. I can assure that you can trust me with any task and request and I will complete it as soon as possible to guarantee productivity. I will bring together all these characteristics together with a smile and a positive outlook with everything that I do because that is who I am. Without aspirations there are no achievements and I am definitely one determined person. POST: SECRETARY Candidate name: Nathalie Filarski Campaign paragraph: I have been a member of the Pre-Law Society at York for the past year and now I want to contribute to the club in a greater way by becoming part of the executive team in the role of secretary. I like helping others and I have always given advice to aspiring law students but never in a formal setting yet. I have previous experience as secretary for the past two years and was also simultaneously the event coordinator this year at the Polish Student's Association at York. It has given me indispensable skills and experience that I will gladly incorporate to being secretary for Prelaw Society. By becoming an executive, I want to carry the great torch and legacy that the past executives have left, and make sure that next year is just as great as this one was with lots of informative events and helpful tips made available to our members. POST: TREASURER Candidate name: Devika Singh Campaign paragraph: Hey everyone, my name is Devika Singh and I am to be your Treasurer for 2012-2013!
