Thursday 15 January

1. Latest "Tool Kit" from York:  http://www.yorku.ca/yfile/archive/index.asp?Article=11847

2. York's message to CUPE: http://www.yorku.ca/yfile/archive/index.asp?Article=11850

3. Those wishing to write to the parties in the strike can find e-mail addresses for CUPE in the bulletins from CUPE published here and for York on the University's main web page.  Please carefully read York's offer to CUPE (cf. # 2. in the items listed for 8 January below before writing:

 http://www.yorku.ca/mediar/archive/Release.php?Release=1580)

and Cupe's replies (http://www.yorku.ca/pswarney/Winters/cupe-09-14-jan.htm)

As stated below (14 January # 5) your comments should be as polite as possible to be persuasive.  I think that "righteous indignation" is partly at the core of this impasse. Equally or more effective targets for your comments both against and for the proposed contract may be all the instructors in all your courses.

4. Tuition is charged according to the credits that the University Senate has assigned to each course Faculty by Faculty and credit is given according to whether Senate deems that you have satisfied the requirements of the course.  My observations from previous disruptions, which have appeared often in these notes, is that attempts to recover legally  tuition paid for classes suspended during strikes have failed.

5. The strike will be settled on Tuesday night only if the majority of all those voting accepts York's offer.  The vote will be held unit by unit.

Wednesday 14 January

1. Ratification Vote:  Monday 19 January and Tuesday 20 January http://www.yorku.ca/yfile/archive/index.asp?Article=11844

2. Details from Ministry of Labour: http://webapps.yorku.ca/NegotiationsUpdates/doc/Notice%20of%20Supervised%20Vote.pdf

3. CUPE 9-14 January: cupe-09-14-jan.htm

4.  Information Meeting today in Vanier Lecture Hall 135 Vanier, at 4 PM: 14.pdf

5. What can you do?  If you wish your instructors to vote for the settlement or if you believe that the offer from York is unfair, send a note to as many of your instructors as you can expressing your opinions.  The politer the note the more persuasive will be your voice be it for or against.  Silence will be understood as support for the current stalemate!

6. Remember that all Academic Offices have been open during the strike and are ready to answer all your questions about courses, majors, changing majors and anything pertaining to your programme of studies.  Those who wish to change majors or programmes should first contact the programme or Department to which they wish to change.  There are currently no line ups or waiting to see informed people in any Department or Programme at York!  Take advantage of the lull before the storm of returning to class.

7.  Latest "Strike Tool Kit": http://www.yorku.ca/yfile/archive/index.asp?Article=11836

8.  The Fall Term will resume 24 hours after Senate Executive announces that the strike has ended.  Students who are away from Campus or at home will have to return as soon as possible.  Any academic problems experienced because of delays in returning may be resolved privately with instructors or through petitions.  As stated many times here,  such problems will be treated with understanding.

9.  Fall and Winter Terms will be reduced by a few hours per class.  Tuition will not be adjusted!

"Reorientation 2009"

When the strike is over, classes will begin 24 hours after the announcement from Senate.

Winters College will host a "Reorientation"  session in the morning during this 24 hour period to answer questions and discuss the completion of the Fall Term and the start of the Winter Term.  Time and place in Winters will be announced when the announcement from Senate is made.

Please let us know if you think that you would attend this session so that we can estimate numbers. Reply to: wcmaster@yorku.ca with "Reorientation" in the subject line.

Stay tuned!

5 January

1.  All Offices and Facilities at York are open.  Only classes remain suspended.  The University is not commenting on the continuing negotiations.  For the latest links from York go to: http://www.yorku.ca/mediar/archive/Release.asp?Release=1577

2.  New Drop dates for courses in the Fall Term

On 5 November the University announced  new drop dates for courses in the Fall term.  This is probably among the many bulletins circulated by the University and repeated on this site.  Just in case any have missed this, go to: Extension of Drop Date - Bulletin23.doc

3. Senate has announced that at least 24 hour notice will be given before the resumption of classes once the strike is settled.

4. The number of days lost to the strike will be calculated from 6 November to the last class scheduled for each of your classes in the regular Fall term; and then from every class suspended from today 5 January to the end of the strike.  You will have lost a minimum of three weeks of classes already.  The examination period will, of course, add more days to the suspended Fall term.

4 January

1.  For the latest from CUPE: cupe-04-jan.htm

2.  Important message from the Department of Theatre:

Hello everyone and welcome to the new year. I hope that you have been enjoying the holidays.

Please pass this email on to any students you may have contacts for who are not members of the TSA or Student Production Managers - I do not have access all student emails from my desk at home.

I am writing in regards to the interview with Theatre student Melanie Hague in today's Toronto Star. There is information that could be misleading and I want to make sure that it does not cause confusion. I have talked to Melanie and I know that it was not her intention at all to create any misunderstanding nor to shed any negative light on the Department of Theatre.

The specific line I am concerned about reads "Two earlier student plays have been cancelled because of the strike".

We have not cancelled any productions, nor are we planning to. We did recognize that we would not be able to make up the missed performances of Fireraisers which were lost in November.

The Department Executive has been meeting regularly to reassess possibilities for all remaining productions and we have never considered cancellation an option.

Although there are still many unanswered questions regarding the resumption of activities, we are working to make sure that we can get back on track as much as possible. I am piggy backing this email on the tail of my last email in case there are people who may not have received it. It does state what we do know at present about the Department activities.

Thank you all, and I hope to see you soon!

Regards,

Shawn

3.  Students who are beginning courses at Sheridan College this week will have to arrange scheduling problems with Fall Term courses at York resuming after the strike ends with instructors in their York courses.  There should be plenty of flexibility and understanding.

4.  Students who have arranged for holidays during the now cancelled Reading Week will also have to make arrangements instructor by instructor.  Since Reading Weeks are supposed to be academic,  I  am not certain about the amount of flexibility will be granted that will be show.  In every case petitions will be possible and handled with care and understanding.

5. Deadlines for refunds for dropped courses in Winter Term will be adjusted relative to the starting dates  of these courses.

6.  No academic terms at York have been cancelled.

KALENDAE IANVARIAE

Happy New Year(?)

1. CUPE and the University have agreed to meet on Friday 2 January 2009! http://www.yorku.ca/mediar/archive/Release.asp?Release=1576

2. My guess is that there will be few days bfore the end of the strike and the restart of classes.

3. Arrangements that you have made for the end of Winter Term will, if necessary, have to be negotiated at the end of the strike.  Petitions should be treated with understanding.
