"EFFECTIVE ACADEMIC STRATEGIES

FOR STUDENTS

FROM  ESL BACKGROUNDS"

University level academic work can place particular pressures on students from ESL (English as a Second Language) backgrounds. Understanding what professors want, what makes an acceptable essay, following lectures, keeping up with course readings, and participation in class discussion can be demanding and confusing. This session will discuss these and other problems for ESL students, but participants are also invited to raise any problems they have experienced using English as an academic language so that strategies for dealing with them can be discussed.

Nicholas Elson is a professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics and ESL Coordinator in the Faculty of Arts.
