NEUROFIBROMATOSIS RESEARCH PROGRAM (NFRP)
 

1) Clinical Trial Award – (Funding Opportunity No.: W81XWH-12-NFRP-CTA)

 
Objectives
To support pilot and Phase 0, I, or II clinical trials with the potential to have a major impact on the treatment or management of NF. Funding from this award mechanism must support a clinical trial and may not be used for preclinical research studies.

2) Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award (Funding Opportunity No.:
 W81XWH-12-NFRP-EHDA)

 

Objectives
To support the initial exploration of innovative, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the NF research field. The proposed work should provide initial principles of an innovative question/concept and results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based. This award is designed to provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. The presentation of preliminary data is encouraged, but not required.

3) Investigator-Initiated Research Award (Funding Opportunity No.:
 W81XWH-12-NFRP-IIRA)

 

Objectives
To support innovative basic and clinically oriented research that will:
·        
Provide insight into the development of NF, or into particular lesions or abnormalities which occur as a result of NF,
·        
Result in substantial improvements over today’s approach to the diagnosis and treatment of NF, and
·        
Have an impact on the quality of life of persons with those diseases.
 
Areas of Emphasis: The FY12 NFRP strongly encourages research applications that specifically address the critical needs of the NF community in the following areas of emphasis:
·        
Cognitive and social dysfunction in the setting of NF
·        
Drug discovery for the treatment of NF
·        
Effects of aging, including hormonal changes and cardiovascular disease in the setting of NF
·        
Epigenetics, including non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs, in causation or progression of abnormalities from NF
·        
Novel disease markers such as imaging and proteomics of NF
·        
Pain in the setting of NF
·        
Plexiform and dermal neurofibromas
·        
Tumor heterogeneity in NF-associated neoplasia
   
Value
Up to $525K plus indirect costs 
If requesting an Optional Qualified Collaborator or Optional Nested Postdoctoral Traineeship, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are $675K plus indirect costs.

4) New Investigator Award (Funding Opportunity No.: W81XWH-12-NFRP-NIA)

 

Objectives
To support the continued development of promising independent investigators and/or the transition of established investigators into a career in the field of NF research. Experience in NF research is allowed, but not required. However, Principal Investigators (PIs) with a limited background in NF research are strongly encouraged to have a collaborator who is experienced in the NF field. New Investigator Award applications must include preliminary data that is relevant to NF and the proposed project.

3) Idea Development Award (IDA) (Funding Opportunity No.:
W81XWH-12-TSCRP-IDA)
 

Objectives
To support high-impact, innovative research that will drive the field of TSC research forward. Preclinical studies are encouraged, but clinical trials are not allowed.

 
Value
Up to $425K plus indirect costs.  If requesting an Optional Qualified Collaborator or Optional Nested Postdoctoral Traineeship, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are $575K plus indirect costs.

PEER REVIEWED MEDICAL  RESEARCH PROGRAM (PRMRP)
 

1.      Clinical Trial Award (Funding Opportunity No.: W81XWH-12-PRMRP-CTA)

 
Objectives
To support the rapid implementation of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on a disease or condition addressed in at least one of the Congressionally directed FY12 PRMRP topic areas. Clinical trials may be designed to evaluate promising new products, pharmacologic agents (drugs or biologics), devices, clinical guidance, and/or emerging approaches and technologies. Proposed projects may range from small proof-of-concept (i.e., pilot, first in human, or Phase 0) trials to demonstrate feasibility or inform the design of more advanced trials, through large-scale trials to determine efficacy in relevant patient populations. All studies must be responsive to the health care needs of the military service members, veterans, and/or beneficiaries; however, the use of military populations is not required.

Objectives
To support innovative, untested, high-risk/ potentially high-reward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods.
Studies supported by this award are expected to lay the groundwork for future avenues of scientific investigation. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design.

Objectives
To provide support for the translation of promising preclinical findings into products for clinical applications, including prevention, detection, diagnosis, patient care, and/or quality of life, in at least one of the Congressionally directed FY12 PRMRP topic areas. Products in development should be responsive to the health care needs of military service members, veterans, and/or beneficiaries.

ORS Submission Policy
York University researchers are reminded that all applications for external research funding, including Letters of Intent, must be reviewed and approved by the Office of Research Services before they are submitted to the granting agency. For internal approval, the application must be accompanied by a completed ORS Checklist, which requires the Chair’s and Dean’s signatures.

To ensure that the approved application is ready by the agency deadline, a complete application folder must be submitted to the ORS ten (10) working days prior to final submission date.
