Answer each of the questions below in 600 words or less.  Each question carries equal weight (ie. 50% each).  Answers must be typewritten, and you must provide a word count at the end of each answer.  Please submit a hard copy of your mid-term to Nuzhat Khurshid between 12 pm and 2pm, Friday, November 29th, in South Ross 606 (unless your TA has made alternative arrangements for submission).  Please include your name, student number, and your TA’s name and tutorial number.

1.     What is the difference between protective and developmental republicanism, and how are the origins of each reflected in the ancient world?

 

2.     What are the concepts of ‘utilitarianism’ and the ‘harm principle’, and how do they influence John Stuart Mill’s conception of governance?
