IRLT Speaker Series

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013 from 12:30 - 2:00 PM in TEL building, Room 1009. Dr. Tony Bates gave a talk on Designing University Teaching for the 21st Century. Tony examined to what extent our teaching needs to change in response to the impact of technology in the University today. Are there universal truths about university teaching that don’t change, despite the technology? When should we teach at a distance, and when and how should we combine online learning with face-to-face teaching?

Dr. Bates answered these questions by looking at the skills and knowledge required in the information age, and how technology itself can be used to develop such skills and knowledge. His presentation focused on how learning management systems are changing, how social media can support university teaching and learning, and what the implications are for the day-to-day work of instructors.
