Gazzaniga’s split-brain research

In his discussion of the divided self, Haidt introduces Michael Gazzaniga’s studies on the functioning of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Haidt is particularly interested in the relation of Gazzaniga’s concept of the “interpreter module” to his own metaphor of the self as a rider on the back of an elephant. A number of videos are available illustrating Gazzaniga’s studies, and this page on the Situationist website puts together three that are both fascinating and informative. The third video shows a situation very similar to the one described by Benson (p 118) in which a person behaves as though he possessed two separate and conflicting minds.
