President Hello! My name is Carmela Reina and I am the Secretary, Chair of the Bake Sale, and Artistic Director for the Students Association for Single Parents. I record all of the concerns and idea’s that are addressed during meetings in order for us to organize a means to create change that will assist single parents within our school. I also create tabling boards, banners and organize the Bake Sales not only to catch single parents attention and provide essential information about S.A.S.P to people on campus but also to raise financial proceeds that will assist the S.A.S.P scholarship program. This year our goal is to raise $12, 500. My interest and dedication to S.A.S.P lies in the fact that the majority of single parents on campus are invisible and unrecognized. As a result single parents in the York campus community are not receiving the resources that should be available. My goal as a S.A.S.P executive is to make resources available and accessible to every single parent at York University and all those who are products of one. In terms of my academic career, I am currently a fourth year double hons. major of Sociology and Women’s Studies at York University. I enjoy doing work in both fields and hope to pursue graduate studies in the future. |

Cylinta ![]() Hi! My name is Cylinta Hasfal and I am a Council Member for SASP. My responsibilities include fundraising, organizing events, creating community partnerships, promoting activities and coming up with ideas to enhance the lives of single parents here at York University. I am a 4th year Sociology major and have experience that includes facilitating workshops and working with clients for organizations such as the Mississauga YMCA Employment Resource Center, Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre and after school programs in the Jane/Finch area. The reason I chose to be part of this organization is because I know the struggles that single parents go through in order to juggle school, work, volunteer activities along with all the other responsibilities that come along with being a parent. I loved the idea of having a space on campus devoted to the purpose of helping student parents achieve their social, academic and professional goals and look forward to being of assistance now and in the future! |

Thus, post-secondary educations and society must assist parents achieve their goals and potentials, as they are the biggest role models in their children’s lives. Returning to academia after full-time employment and experiencing life as a single parent is challenging and requires dedication and commitment. My desire is to build a supportive community that provides parents with the necessary mentoring and counselling, as well as the adequate resources to fulfil their potential and successful obtain a post secondary education. This will be accomplished by helping one parent at a time, one step at a time. |
