Past award winners

At its meeting in 1982, the Council established an Awards program with two types of awards. One is the “Honorary Member” for persons who have made invaluable contributions to the whole STP community. The second type is for the prime movers (organizers and coordinators) of scientific programs within SCOSTEP and for special services to the STP community. An Awards Committee was established to evaluate nominations and select the recipients in this category; the Bureau selects the Honorary Members.

Honorary Members selected to date:

Joe Haskell Allen
Sir Granville Beynon*
Prof. K. D. Cole
Dr. Herbert Friedman*
Prof. C. de Jager
Prof. C. -H. Liu
Prof. T. Nagata*
Prof. J. G. Roederer
Dr. Z. Svestka
Dr. D. J. Williams

Service Awards have been presented to:

Joe Haskell Allen – outstanding services to the International Magnetosphere Study in directing the IMS Information Exchange Office

Sidney Allan Bowhill – Prime Mover of the Middle Atmosphere Program resulting in important new middle atmosphere research in many nations of the world

Edward R. Dyer* – fifteen years of outstanding work and enduring dedication to IUCSTP/SCOSTEP as Scientific Secretary

Vladimir Vasilyevich Migulin* – leadership and his many outstanding services to the Solar-Terrestrial Physics Community

Alan H. Shapley – outstanding support of SCOSTEP scientific programs by the establishment and operation of data services fundamental to Solar- Terrestrial Physics

Paul A. Simon – outstanding services to the Solar Maximum Year in coordinating space and ground-based experiments

Michael J. Teague – outstanding services to the International Magnetosphere Study through the IMS Satellite Situation Center

James I. Vette – outstanding services to the International Magnetosphere Study in establishing the IMS Satellite Situation Center

SCOSTEP Mandate

SCOSTEP seeks opportunities for interaction with national and international programs involving Solar-Terrestrial Physics elements. It provides guidance to the STP discipline centers of ICSU’s World Data Center system. It attempts to develop and sustain student interest in Sun-Earth connections, to promote efficient exchange of data and information between solar and terrestrial scientists in all countries, and to seek projects and programs that cross over traditional boundaries of physical regions and focused scientific disciplines.
