SENATE COMMITTEE ON TEACHING AND LEARNING

Online Teaching Evaluation Resources

The Senate Committee on Teaching and Learning's Guide to Teaching Assessment and Evaluation defines quality teaching as "that activity which brings about the most productive and beneficial learning experience for students and promotes their development as learners".  The Committee encourages all instructors to embark upon a reflective practice in their teaching, for formative purposes and for professional development.

In order to assist you in this undertaking,  SCOTL has recently revised its Guide to Teaching Assessment and Evaluation and we recommend this as a starting-point.  In addition, the following Web-based resources have been identified as useful sites on which to find sample forms and/or questionnaires, and reviews of the literature.

  • The Office of Educational Assessment at the University of Washington's "Instructional Assessment System" has been adopted by a number of institutions.  This site contains a series of evaluation forms, designed for different kinds of learning environments.  The site also has information on the theory and development of the "IAS"
  • The University of California, San Diego's CTD Evaluation Resources site includes sample questionnaires and an "evaluation construction set" that allows you to create your own evaluation form online.
  • Two Kansas State University Idea Papers (#32 and #22) offer good reviews of the literature, as well as concrete ideas for developing evaluation forms.
  • Michigan Virtual University's peer reviewed electronic journal, Technology Source, deals with the issues of technology in university education.  Some of the articles related to assessment and evaluation are:

Electronic Course Evaluation Is Not Necessarily the Solution, by Michael Theall

Plugging in to Course Evaluation, by Keith Hmieleski and Matthew V. Champagne

Classroom Assessment Techniques in Asynchronous Learning Networks by Tom Henderson

  • York University's Centre for the Support of Teaching provides a useful Webliography that contains a section on "Course Development, Delivery and Evaluation which is well worth visiting.
