Security professionals can give you the tools needed to reduce the opportunity for crime to occur and can augment protection of people and assets with our various programs and services, but ultimately it is up to you to make use of those tools. Many crimes that occur are opportunity related. An opportunity is created for a motivated offender when we leave our office unlocked, or leave cellular telephones and laptops unattended in whatever setting. We all have the ability to manage the opportunity factor of crime and when the opportunity factor is removed, so is the likelihood for crime to occur. All of our programs and strategies are about acting pro-actively, before there is a crime problem.
CPTED FOR PARKING STRUCTURES
Security Services fosters Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to make it harder, riskier, or less rewarding for offenders to commit crime. The CPTED program introduces ways to deter crime by changing the design of buildings and public spaces. (PDF)
ENVIRONMENTAL LIGHTING
The campus is environmentally lit for safety. When outages occur, York Student Safety Officers detail them in a weekly report forwarded to York 's Facilities Services Department. If you see a light out and feel it could jeopardize personal safety, please report the matter immediately to the Security Control Centre. Security Services will maintain patrols in the affected area until Facilities Services completes repairs.
