Fast Feminism

Shannon BellThe Fast Feminist [FF] is a post gender provocateur; not so much a gender terrorist, as a gender risk-taker always going the distance with her body, pushing the limits of what a body defined as female does, a post or past female Zarathustra, passionately engaged in an ethical nihilistic endeavor of living … (p.1)

Grounded in the female phallus, fast feminism is not about location [postmodern feminism, postfeminism, third wave feminism, queer theory, cyber feminism, hypermasculinist speed theory]; rather, it’s about gait; it does what Levinas says about Maurice

Blanchot’s writing: the I in it is “identified by gait rather location,” Blanchot’s text propels you through locations. “Fragmentary writing is risk, it would seem: risk itself. It is not based on any theory[.]” Fast Feminism obviously does it on different terrains; gaiting, or speed-walking through locations, morphing events, cross-breeding philosophies, interfacing fast sex fables. Morphing events - female ejaculation, drag kinging, queer postporn practice, the Bosnian and Croatian women's movements' fight against war and post war gendercide, child pornography - with Bataille and Stelarc's excess of risk, or risk of excess, barely held together by Levinasian pragmatics; instructed by the beauty of Jean Francois Lyotard's response - Postmodern Fables - to the postmodern philosophy he was so instrumental in defining. Lyotard summarizes the postmodern plight in three short sentences: "Today, life is fast. It vaporizes morals ... But that doesn't keep us from asking questions: how to live and why?" Lyotard's response: ethical fables premised on living and in his living and telling a doing of Levinasian pragmatics.

Fast Feminism is a doing of philosophy with the intensity of speed and the nihlism of not caring that the sites don't mesh; speed morphing is alchemical. “Asking questions seems to preface giving an answer. In the realm of fast feminism the speed of questioning erases the necessity of answering. FF has too many places to go and not time to stop and answer. A question is a mode of accelerated thought. An answer collapses into stasis. Excess is speedy acquisition. Indifference is bracketed not in the nexus of nihilism [as it was in world that was not indifferent], but in the aura of annihilation.”(Stelarc, 2002, email communication)

FF has the female phallus – her own territory; thus any territory she enters is FF territory. FF’s bearing is pornosophical, a state of existence that has evaporated both pornography and philosophy beyond alchemical mix; her nihilism, thought and enacted nihilistically, annihilates held distinctions. FF prefers lethal to toxic. (p.19)
