Calendar Course Description

This course invites participants to reflect on the practice of teaching mathematics in light of research and their own experiences. It examines how teachers draw on mathematical and pedagogical knowledge in their work. A specialised mathematics background is not a prerequisite.

Expanded Course Description

Teaching mathematics for understanding involves more than simply demonstrating procedures and telling students what they need to know. Studies of teaching practice reveal that the mathematics teacher carries out a diverse group of tasks. In the course we will focus on developing a deeper understanding of teachers’ use of mathematical-pedagogical knowledge in choosing appropriate mathematical models, responding to student difficulties, and guiding profitable mathematical discussions. Participants will investigate teachers’ roles in the mathematics classroom by examining and discussing the relevant literature, by analysing selected activities and by reflecting on their own experiences.

In order to make the material accessible to all, fundamental mathematical ideas from the elementary curriculum will be used as the basis for analysis and discussion. In final papers, students may draw on ideas from other curricula (e.g., secondary).

Evaluation

Evaluation for the course will be based on: Reading assignments (30%); Report on Practice (15%); Final project (55%).

Presentation of Submitted Work

Please use APA style for submitted papers.

Online Participation

There will be a conference set up on First Class. Please ensure that you are connected by February 1st. After that time we will have an online discussion of aspects of teaching mathematics with technology. All participants are expected to be active contributors to this exchange, which takes the place of one classroom session.
