Prof. Peter Penz

Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University, Toronto, Canada

 

Peter Penz (BA, MA UBC; DPhil Oxford) is Professor Emeritus in York University’s Faculty of Environmental Studies.  He was Director of the university’s Centre for Refugee Studies 1999-2004.  He is a member of the Jonglei (South Sudan) Peace Initiative North America and is working on human-security-oriented development in South Sudan.  His areas of teaching and research include international ethics and global justice, displacement processes, humanitarian action, environmental advocacy, the ethics of asylum and development assistance, and methods of project assessment and evaluation.  His publications include Displacement by Development: Ethics, Rights and Responsibilities (2011) and the co-edited volumes Political Ecology: Global and Local (1998) and Global Justice, Global Democracy (1997).  He was born in wartime Europe, was internally displaced and immigrated with his family to Canada from East Pakistan [now Bangladesh] in 1959.
