Nancy E. Doherty (nee Green)

TENNIS and BADMINTON
1967 - 1971

BA (Honours), 1971, Physical Education

 

A former Canadian junior tennis champion and nationally ranked player, Nancy Green competed for York in the first singles position for four years, never surrendering a match until her final season. She led York to the gold at both the OQWCIA and the WITCA championships in 1968-69 and in 1969-70. She also competed as York's second singles entrant in interuniversity badminton in 1967-68 finishing first in her division and being named the top female player at the OQWCIA championship. Nancy served on York's Women's Athletic Council (WAC) from 1968 to 1971, including one year as President (1969-70).
 

Steven N. Latinovich

HOCKEY
1969 - 1972

LLB, 1972

 

A former junior and semi-professional player, Steve Latinovich was an outstanding left-winger for the Yeomen hockey team for three seasons. In 1969-70, he contributed to York's undefeated season and OIAA league championship (13 goals and 16 assists in 10 games), and to its consolation title at the CIAU finals. In 1970-71, he scored 15 goals and 12 assists in 9 OIAA games. In 1971-72, Steve led York with 28 goals and 23 assists in 16 league games and was second in scoring in the newly structured OUAA. He was named both an OUAA and CIAU All-Star; was selected a member of the Canadian team for the World Student Games in Plattsburg, New York (a team which he led in scoring); and won honours as York's male Athlete of the Year.
 

Mary E. Lyons

Coordinator of Women's Interuniversity Athletics

 

A graduate of Queen's University and the State University of New York, Mary Lyons came to York after 12 years of teaching high school physical education and with a coaching background in volleyball, track and field, gymnastics and basketball. Through her exceptional efforts in initiating and developing the women's athletic program, recruiting a strong coaching staff, and establishing an active and effective student governed Women's Athletic Council (WAC), York established one of the best reputations in women's university sport at both the provincial and national level. Mary served as President of the OQWCIA and the OWIAA, and as a Director of the CWIAU and the CIAU. She also coached the York women's volleyball team for seven years and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Volleyball Association. Mary convened many Ontario interuniversity sports, served on numerous university committees, and coordinated the physical education curriculum in York's Faculty of Education.
 

Murray D. Stroud

HOCKEY
1969 - 1972

LLB, 1972

 

In 1968, Murray Stroud received a BPhE from the University of Toronto where he had been a standout for the Varsity Blues hockey team. After a year of teaching high school, he came to York to study law, and joined the hockey Yeomen. During that 1969-70 season, he contributed significantly to the York team's 10-0 OIAA league record and OIAA championship title. He led the Yeomen and the league in scoring, notching 17 goals and 18 assists. The York team advanced to the CIAU championship, where it won two of three games and the consolation title. In 1970-71, Murray again led York in scoring en route to the team's second place OIAA finish. His 17 goals and 19 assists placed him second among league scorers. Murray was named York's male Athlete of the Year in 1969-70 and was selected CIAU All-Canadian in 1970-71.
