Project:
Goal:
The overarching scientific goal of this project is to develop and implement an improved worldwide web mapping system to store and present pre-rendered geographic information that is math based, multi-resolution, seamless, low distortion, consistent and multipurpose.
Context:
The recent increased popularity of world-wide
web mapping has created a growing multibillion dollar
global industry.
• The use of the Internet for sharing and
viewing geospatial data has evolved
and grown to the point where the
technology is frequently and commonly used by people with geo-expertise
ranging from professionals, to semiskilled
workers, to the general public.
Motivation:
Improved web map visualisation for:
• Scientific data visualisation and exchange particularly in Northern regions
• Government and industry development plans for the North of Canada
• General public
Limitations:
Web map technology utilization is not at the ubiquitous level
yet due in‐part to well‐known large sytematic geometric distortions
introduced by "Web Mercator Projection" in the north.
Organizations that must provide consistent national coverage (such as
Canadian federal government departments), are particularly vulnerable to
this problem.
