Stong Awards List

Allen C. Koretsky Book Prize.

Named in honor of Allen C. Koretsky, who served as Master of Stong College from 1988 to 1993, this $200 book prize will be awarded to a Stong College student for an outstanding essay in a course in Medieval or Renaissance English Literature in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.  It is preferred that the prize take the form of a significant and substantial book, and if there is a remainder, that amount should be in the form of a gift certificate from the York University bookstore.




Elizabeth Sabiston Prize for Excellence in Academic Writing, The

Given in honour of Professor Elizabeth Sabiston, for many years the Academic Advisor of Stong College, this prize is awarded annually to a Stong College student whose achievements in academic writing in a first or second year English or Humanities course are deemed to be of outstanding quality. Selected writings must be accompanied by a nominating letter from the Course Director. For further information, contact the Assistant to the Master in Room 317, Stong College.




The Ernest Daniel Stong Essay Prize.

Established in memory of Ernest Daniel Stong (1887-1987), patriarch of the Stong family. Recipient must be a Stong student in the Canadian Studies program or other programs whose essay on a Canadian topic is selected as the most outstanding. $100.00 will be presented to a Stong student.




Gerard Sendrey Prize, The

This award was established by Gerard Sendrey of Bordeaux, France, a renowned graphic artist to honour outstanding achievement in the Visual Arts. Judging is based on work presented at Stong's Annual Student Show, normally held toward the end of the academic year in the Samuel J. Zacks Art Gallery. For further information, contact the Assistant to the Master in Room 317, Stong College. The Board of Adjudicators reserves the right not to make an award in a given year.



Olga Cirak Alumni Bursary

The purpose of the bursary is to provide an opportunity for financial aid to full-time members of the Stong Community of at least one full academic term who have demonstrated a high level of commitment and involvement in the college, a serious academic attitude and financial need. The Bursary is advertised in the fall, and given out normally in October following interviews. For further information, please contact the Assistant to the Master in Room 317, Stong College. An award may not be presented each year.



Samuel J. Zacks Scholarship

There are two Scholarships awarded each year. One is to a full-time student enrolled in either the History of Arts/Visual Arts programmes or the Performing Arts in the Faculty of Fine Arts on the basis of artistic merit, predicated on College affiliation of at least one full academic session. Another Scholarship, awarded to the returning full-time Faculty of Fine Arts student with the highest sessional grade point average. The Scholarship Committee and the Board of Adjudicators reserve the right not to make awards in a given year.



Stong College Scholarship


This Scholarship was established by members of the Stong Community: students, administrators, faculty and Alumni in 1982. The Scholarship is awarded to the returning full-time Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies student with the highest sessional grade point average, and has been affiliated with the Stong College for at least one full academic session. For further information, please contact the Assistant to the Master in Room 317, Stong College. The Committee reserves the right not to award a scholarship in a given year.



Virginia Rock Award, The

The Virginia Rock Award, named in honour of the first Master of Stong College, is funded by the entire college community. The successful candidate will have earned a minimum 6.0 grade point average, will have been an active contributor to the College, and will have financial need. The award is thus intended to recognize a distinctive combination of academic achievement and devotion to Stong College and its ideals. The Award is advertised in the fall, and given out in October. Contest


Kent Haworth Playwriting Contest: (click here)


RULES & ELIGIBILITY

1. The contest is open to any current undergraduate student of York University.
2. The theme, subject, and style (masque, monologue, dialogue or any other suitable form) are left to the playwright's imagination. The play's performance duration should be between 15 - 30 minutes.
3. Your play must be inspired by something specific in the archival collection: it may be a name, a letter, an event, a photograph, or indeed any item in the collection. You must visit the archives in order to be eligible to enter the contest. In the meantime check out the Archival Research Tutorial by going to the library home page and choosing York libraries\Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections\Archival Research Tutorial.
4. Your submission must include a personal statement that explains what the exact inspiration was for your play (that is to say, what item in the archives caught your attention) and how/why it impacted you.
5. Playwrights are responsible for ensuring that their work does not infringe on copyright. See "information" below for assistance with this matter.
6. Your submission must include a signed statement authorizing Stong College to place a copy of your play in the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections Library of Scott Library..
7. All entrants must complete a registration form no later than Friday, February 4, 2011. These are only available from the Master's office of Stong College (315 Stong). You must come by the Master's office in person to register.
8. This year's winner and runner up will be invited to put on a performance of their play in Stong College at a later date (to be announced).

JUDGING CRITERIA

1. Direct inspiration from something in the archives
2. Evidence of literary and dramatic artistry
3. Most creative use of archival materials
4. Original approach
5. No copyright infringement

REWARDS

The winning submission will receive $750, with $250 going to the runner-up.

DEADLINE

Entries must be submitted in duplicate to 315 Stong College no later than 4PM, Friday, February 25, 2011. Winners will be announced at a reception; date and venue to be determined.
