The Flying Walrus Newspaper
The Flying Walrus is the Stong College Newspaper. It is published monthly and
includes editorials, news from around the college, sports event and scores, and reports
on Student Government meetings. It is located in the basement of the College across
from the Junior Common Room (JCR). The Flying Walrus is always looking for writers,
photographers and editors, so check it out and get involved!

Samuel Beckett Theatre/Screening Room, 112 Stong
The Samuel Beckett Screening Room is named after Samuel Becket (1906-1989) an
Irish writer who extended the frontier of fiction and drama through his exploration of the
absurdity of human existence. Room 112 is a venue for Stong students, faculty and staff
and other members of the community to interact through a shared interest in creating and
enjoying theatre. This year Stong College reaches out again to the artist, the poet, the
singer, the dancer…and lovers of life that we all are. Faculty members who would like to

Samuel J. Zacks Art Gallery

The Samuel J. Zacks Gallery, dedicated October 31, 1972, was named in honour of a distinguished collector and benefactor of art in Toronto and Ontario. Samuel J. Zacks’ gifts to galleries and museums attest to his lifelong concern for the encouragement and sustenance of creativity and civilization.
As an adjunct to the academic learning process, the Samuel J. Zacks Art Gallery functions as a “learning gallery” where the works of artists are not merely displayed but presented in an atmosphere that encourages exploration and questioning. Stong students ably manage the Gallery.
In the winter of 1982, Mrs. Ayala Zacks Abramov, with unexpected generosity, established a Trust Fund in the name of her late husband, which serves as a legacy for coming generations of Stong students in the Fine Arts. The Trust Fund not only encourages a standard of excellence in art in the College and an appreciation of works of the highest order, but through a Scholarship, perpetuate the memory of Samuel Zacks’ good works. Completely at ease with distinguished personalities from many fields, Ayala and Samuel Zacks were the happiest meeting with students and young artists taking their first step toward artistic recognition, among them the now famous Sorel Etrog. Since its inception and dedication, the Samuel J. Zacks Gallery has exhibited not only the works of professional artists but also works of young artists.
The conferring of an Honourary Fellowship in a College is a rare honour bestowed for unusual and outstanding dedication, service, concern and contribution to education, the arts, and so forth. Thus, wishing to formally recognize Mrs. Zacks’ deep interest in Stong College in establishing a Trust Fund--an abiding source of pride and pleasure for all of us--the President of the University recommended to the Board of Governors formal approval of her appointment as Honorary Fellow of Stong College.

The Zacks Gallery is located in Room 109 of Stong College at York University. We are open Mondays from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm, and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Stong Academic Resource Advising Centre
The Stong Academic Resource Advisor Centre, also known as the Fish Bowl, is located in the Stong College Lobby, on the main floor. Resource Advisors begin regularly scheduled hours at the end of September to answer questions and to act as resource personnel for student concerns. Hours will be posted when available. The academic resource advisors are upper-level Stong students who are familiar with York's complicated reality and are always ready to offer friendly assistance.

Stong Listserv
Stong College runs a listserv for students, staff, faculty and Fellows. Any announcements that could be of interest such as upcoming events, scholarship winners, etc. are sent out. Join this listserv by sending an email to scadmin@yorku.ca giving your first and last name, and your email address. If you have any announcements or news that you would like to send out to the community, please email scadmin@yorku.ca. Please note that this listserv is both private and confidential, which means that your email address is not accessible to anyone except the listserv owner. Messages can only be sent out through the Master's Office.
Book Lockers
Book lockers are available to all Stong commuter students (while they last!). You may sign up for a locker in 315 Stong College. There is a $30.00 cash deposit and a $10.00 refund when the lock is returned. Proper Identification is required. Rental fees are used to augment Bursary and Scholarship endowment funds. The Maghreb Centre

The Canada-Maghreb Centre, housed in 356 Stong College and linked academically to the Département d'études françaises, was created as the result of a generous gift from University Professor Emeritus Hédi Bouraoui of an endowment, books and periodicals in the fields of Maghrebian and Franco-Ontarian Studies. There are also subsidiary collections in the literatures of sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Québec and Acadia. The only research centre and library of its kind in Canada, and one of only three in North America, its mandate is to promote cross-cultural research in Francophone Maghrebian and Franco-Ontarian literatures and cultures. The Centre welcomes researchers and writers from Canada, the United States, and overseas. Symposia and colloquia will be mounted, and visiting scholars invited.
