The Social Work in Nigeria Project (SWIN-P) is an international collaboration between the University of Benin, Nigeria and three Canadian universities - York University, the University of Windsor and the University of British Columbia. The SWIN-P is focused on strengthening the capacity of University of Benin, Nigeria to train social workers within a sustainable, indigenously relevant model of social work. The SWIN-P model will adapt aspects of the knowledge and skills developed in the West but will also create new models that are locally and culturally responsive to poverty and vulnerability of women to HIV/AIDS and trafficking.

The goal of the SWIN-P is to improve the well-being of Nigerian women and girls, and thus men and boys as well, through the development of sustainable, community-based and gender equitable social welfare services. The purpose is to improve the quality of social work education in Nigeria by building the capacity of UNIBEN to provide, deliver and sustain high quality, relevant, practical, community-based and professional diploma, undergraduate and graduate social work programs. The SWIN-P will support the development of well-prepared, professional and gender-sensitive personnel of NGOs and Ministry of WASD through the provision of professional in-service education. The anticipated impact is that Nigerian women and girls in Edo State and other parts of the country will experience improved well-being and increased capacity to make decisions that reduce their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS, trafficking for sexual exploitation, and poverty.
