Residence Sign

For some of you Vanier Residence will be your new home for the next eight months. From the outside, the residence building looks like an apartment building, but our format is of a traditional residence with single and double rooms and shared bathrooms. Vanier is entirely non-smoking and is organized into six houses:

L’Arche (2 & 3)

Shalom (4 & 5)

Daybreak (6 & 7)

Caritas (8 & 9)

L’Ewell (10 & 11)

Le Toit (12 & 13).

Each house consists of an even and odd numbered floor. The odd numbered floors have a common room with a microwave, television, and the appropriate furniture. Every even floor has a Don suite. Dons are upper year students, who are there to support you and act as a resource person during your time in residence. The Residence Life Coordinator or Manager (RLC or RLM) is responsible for supervising the Dons and for overseeing all aspects of residence life. He/She is also available as an additional resource for residents throughout the entire building.

Vanier College offers selected students in Vanier Residence the opportunity to live and participate in a Themed House Living-Learning Community. Vanier College Residence has 2 Themed Houses: Humanities & Philosophy; and Economics & Business. These communities bring together groups of students with similar academic interests, giving them opportunities to participate in academic and as social activities outside of class. Throughout the academic year, there will be informal meetings, talks, discussions, field trips and social gatherings for students to participate in with the Vanier College Master, Residence Life Coordinator and Residence Staff, and other select faculty members where relevant, giving you access to professors and students in your subject area.

Administratively, Vanier Residence is set up to afford students more opportunities than merely the convenience of living on campus. Your Residence Don, in collaboration with the Coordinator of Residence Activities, will endeavour to develop a number of events and programs.  These programs vary in scope and range from social/community building events to those with educational twists.  All will be developed to in some way enhance your university experience.  The building as a whole has a Coordinator of Residence Activities who plans events for the entire residence. As a Vanier Resident, you can expect to see events such as Coffee Houses, after-Formal breakfasts, Downtown trips, Skating, Bowling, Movie Nights and Laser Quest.  Another key programming member is the Health Ed. in Residence.  The role of the Health Ed. programmer is to bring healthy lifestyle programs and initiatives into Residence.  For those of you who are interested in programming, suggestions are always welcome and can be submitted to your Don, CRA, or RLC. Vanier Residence also hires Night Porters, who after 7:00 PM each evening, are responsible for signing in all residence guests, and renting movies, games, and other equipment out to residents. We have plenty of excellent equipment to choose from: great movies, the Wii, and even vacuums when you need to clean up a mess. We’re always looking to purchase more equipment, so if there’s something we don’t have that you’d like to see, feel free to let us know!
