Masters appointments to Founders and Stong Colleges

Robert J. Tiffin, Vice President Students is pleased to announce the following appointments:

Mauro Buccheri for a five year term to the position of Master of Founders College

A long term fellow of Founders College, Mauro Buccheri joined York University in 1982 and has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, Italian Studies Program since 1989. He has served four terms as Coordinator of the Italian program, and served on departmental committees, organized many international conferences and lecture series.

Professor Buccheri holds a Ph.D. (University of Toronto) in Modern and Contemporary Italian Literature. He has published on 19th and 20th century Italian writers and is presently working on a study of myth and dialectics titled In the Shadow of Orpheus, which attempts to trace the history of Greek myth and its entanglement with logos or dialectical reason.

Professor Buccheri’s teaching interests and experiences are varied, and range from Italian and European literature to Central and South American poetry, from Italian cinema to Canadian politics of recognition.

Modupe Olaogun for a five year term to the position of Master of Stong College

Professor Olaogun is an Associate Professor in the Department of English where she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in post-colonial and African literatures and drama since 2000. Professor Olaogun holds a doctoral degree in English (York 1993) and BA and MA degrees in English (Ibadan, Nigeria 1980; 1982).

Outside of her teaching and research activities, Professor Olaogun is active in the Toronto theatre community as the artistic director of the AfriCan Theater Ensemble which she founded in 1998.

A Fellow of Founders College (2000), Professor Olaogun strongly believes in the College system and looks forward to beginning her term as Master.

York Federation of Students (YFS) withdraws request and desire to hold referendum

The University is disappointed that the Executive of the York Federation of Students (YFS) has unilaterally decided to withdraw its request and desire to hold a referendum.

The decision, communicated via email to members of the Board of Referendum Commissioners (BORC) at 6:42 PM on March 20th brings to a conclusion months of consultation and effort to enable the YFS to ask its constituency two levy-based questions. The referendum was set to be put to voters at 9am on March 21st when YFS cancelled it. Any suggestion that the University did not support YFS’ efforts in relation to this referendum is erroneous. Since at least October of last year, YFS was fully aware of the referendum guidelines and regulations, including the quorum requirements. Further, it is unfortunate that the YFS media release has a number of errors and misleading statements.

The University affirms that any levy-based referendum must comply with the established BORC guidelines and procedures to ensure adequate and responsible democratic processes are upheld. Any referendum that impacts a student levy must go through BORC which is composed of students, including a YFS appointee and a delegate appointed by the Vice-President Students. The University thanks members of BORC for all of their efforts in particular its Chair, who spent numerous hours on this process.

People interested in this matter may also wish to review Excalibur’s story on this subject, "Vote cancelled over quorum requirements".
