"If I should die, I have left no immortal work behind me-nothing to make my friends proud of my memory-but I have loved the principle of beauty in all things, and if I had had time I would have made myself remembered."
I don't know about you, but I'm already living like the school year is over. I couldn't tell you what assignments I have due, how many words are left to write before April comes, or even if I have any exams this spring. Visions of post-degree life are already floating through my head, blessedly free of essays, readings, and epic transit treks up to North York. Maybe other fourth year students who don't plan on graduate work feel the same; at this point in the game, it's hard to do anything but coast. Unfortunately this is reality and the next two months aren't as easily skipped as my classes. So while we all prepare to buckle down, yet again, it's important to live in the present as much as plan for the future. I think this is one of the Walrus's best issues yet. The variety and quality of the submissions absolutely floors me, especially in comparison to the paper's humble, pamphlet-like state only a few years ago. I can only hope that this momentum and well of support carries the Walrus on long after I've bid the hallowed halls and malls of York farewell. On that note, I'd like to announce that the Flying Walrus is hiring staff for the 2008-2009 school year. Applications are due on March 8, so that the current staff is able to hire and train our replacements while working on this year's final issue. Right now, we're looking for an assistant editor and Stong College correspondent, an arts and literature editor, and a health and sports editor. To apply, you need only be a student affiliated with Stong. Of course, we'd also like it if you shared the irreverent, sarcastic-yet-fun-loving nature of the Walrus itself. We're a paper more interested in independent student voices than hard-hitting news, pop culture tidbits, or political debate. We love good writing, randomosity, and intelligence. If you do too, send your resume and cover letter to us! With both the present and future of this paper secured, I'll be able to leave York with the confidence that, despite the many trials and disappointments of these past four years, I will have contributed my time towards something really worthwhile. This paper is something I'm really glad I didn't skip over. Thank you.
