York & U
 April 2007

You can choose how you want to get involved in life at York. Whether you join a sports team, or volunteer on campus or out in the community, York has many great ways for you to pursue non-academic interests and make friends! More>>

It's been a crazy few months: first you decided what schools you'd like to apply to, then you waited (and waited!) to hear back from your choices. Note that many universities - York included - make offers based on final grades, sending out offers at least three times between February and June. Now that you've decided to accept an offer of admission, what do you do? How do you get from here to classes in September? More>>

There are always a wide variety of events planned for York students. Here are just a few of the events happening this month to give you a taste of life on campus and the services we provide our students. Some of them are open to the public; call ahead if you'd like to attend.

A Retrospective on Parade and Dr. Strangelove Dr. Strangelove - April 25 to June 24, 2007
Toronto artist Anitra Hamilton’s Retrospective on Parade passes through the Art Gallery of York University with a review of 10 years of her work. The retrospective marshals a number of the artist’s parade-influenced works, including a 20 by 55 foot mural and a newly AGYU-commissioned Audio Parade based on Toronto’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Also, Toronto artist Kristan Horton's doubly legendary Dr. Strangelove Dr. Strangelove targets the AGYU with its explosive comic vision. Horton has recreated each scene of Stanley Kubrick's original Dr. Strangelove film with objects at hand in his studio, deflating what is exaggerated in Kubrick's black comedy.

Admission is free. Gallery hours: Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm; Wednesday, 10am-8pm; Sunday, 12-5pm; and Saturday closed. For more information

Dear Yorkie,
University seems a bit frightening. It's so big and different from high school. Help!
Overwhelmed

Dear Overwhelmed,
It may seem scary at first, but you will adjust to life at university! Be sure to get your toes wet by dropping into York's RED Zone, running all summer on Keele campus. At the RED Zone you can speak to current students about what life is really like at York, get insider tips on how to make your transition easier and learn how to find your way around campus. From getting your YU-card to signing up for a sports club, York's RED Zone will prepare you for the year ahead.

Also, York's Student Community & Leadership Development (SC&LD) runs a social and informative Orientation Week at the beginning of the fall term and holds seminars and workshops all year as a part of the First Year Experience series. Colleges offer academic orientation, preparing you for the classes and surmounting the challenges you have ahead as well as giving you a chance to make friends and get comfortable on campus.

Dear Yorkie,
What's the difference between suite-style and traditional residences?
Moving In

Dear Moving In,
Residence is always a great choice for your first year. You'll have so much fun! Most of the residences at York are traditional style: a double or single room that is furnished with a desk, bed, closet, shelves and so forth. You'll share a common room or lounge with about a dozen other residents.

The suite-style residences, Calumet (six-person suites) and Pond Road (two-person suites) are like mini-apartments. You will have your own bedroom and share a full kitchen and bathroom with your suitemate. Suite style does cost more, but you can cook your own food and aren't required to purchase a meal plan.

To get a space in residence, make sure you apply by the June 1 deadline!
