The Department of English presents Seth Lerer- Hamlet and the Lyric Stage

Nov 7, 2012, 2:30-4:30PM

Seth Lerer, dean of arts and humanities and Distinguished Professor of Literature at the University of California at San Diego, will deliver a talk about Hamlet and the lyric stage. He is the author of many books and articles on Medieval Studies, Renaissance studies, comparative philology, history of scholarship and children’s literature. He won the 2010 Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism and the 2009 National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism for Children’s Literature: A Readers’ History from Aesop to Harry Potter. His forthcoming book is Prospero’s Son: Life, Books, Love, and Theater, a memoir that will be published in the spring.

Following Lerer’s talk, The Musicians in Ordinary will perform “The Songs of Hamlet.” Named after the singers and lutenists who performed in the most intimate quarters of the Stuart monarchs’ palace, The Musicians In Ordinary for the Lutes and Voices dedicate themselves to the performance of early solo song and vocal chamber music. Soprano Hallie Fishel and lutenist John Edwards have been described as "winning performers of winning music". A fixture on the Toronto early music scene for over 10 years, they have concertized across North America and lecture regularly at universities and museums.
