Improving the Accessibility of PDFs

Software Requirements

You must have a full, recent version of Adobe Acrobat software installed on your computer in order to create accessible PDF documents. This is required even if you do all your work in your original document, and never make changes with Acrobat itself. You won't get an accessible PDF using the quick "export" or "print to PDF" features that might be built into some software. The full version of Acrobat has to be there in order for accessibility features to be preserved when you convert the document to PDF.

We tested our instructions with Acrobat version 6.0; as of September 2005, the current version is 7.0.
