The York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) was established in 2002 to advance the academic study of Asia (South, East and Southeast) and Asian Diasporas. YCAR continues the strong tradition of internationally recognized research in Asian studies pioneered since 1974 by the University of Toronto-York University Joint Centre on Modern East Asia, more recently known as the University of Toronto-York University Joint Centre for Asia Pacific Studies (JCAPS), in which York faculty members and graduate students played a central role.

YCAR promotes excellence in research on historic and contemporary Asia and Asian Diaspora communities. The Centre supports Asian Studies at York University and the University’s engagement with Asia and Asian diaspora communities through research and graduate student training as well as through linkages with relevant institutions, policymakers, communities and business people.

More widely, the Centre cooperates with academic and other partners across Canada and internationally to promote public understanding of Asia and Asian Diasporas and Canada’s multiple engagements with the region. YCAR offers memberships to faculty, graduate students and other researchers. Its members study Southeast, East and South Asia as well as Asian Diaspora communities.

YCAR is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) within York University. ORUs bring together researchers from across the university, including social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and the professional schools, to organize and administer research, conference, and training projects, as well provide public profile for York University research. 

Financial accounting for York University ORUs is overseen by York University's finance department.
