There is a large community of faculty and graduate students from across the humanities and social sciences involved in research related to South Asia and South Asian Diasporic communities. Members contribute to contemporary debates ranging from the study of colonial history to the post-colonial politics of nationalism, development and migration, from a diversity of disciplinary and theoretical perspectives.

Some key themes around which many scholars are working include:
Political economy, agrarian transition, rural labour, framing rural and urban spaces
Development studies: epistemologies and discourses of development, state intervention, negotiating globalization, social movements
Production, maintenance and challenges to power relations, intersections of caste, class, gender, religion
Critical Diaspora studies: migration and labour, politics of multiculturalism, diasporic narratives
Post-colonial and cultural studies, third world feminisms, power and representation
