Membership Information

While the majority of YCAR's Associates are part of the York community, our membership is international. We currently have Research Associates and have hosted Visiting Scholars and Visiting Graduate Associates from Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, India, the Philippines and the United States as well as from Canada.

YCAR offers the following five distinctive kinds of affiliation (as per the YCAR Constitution):

(1)     Faculty Associates
(2)     Research Associates
(3)     Visiting Scholars
(4)     Senior Research Associates
(5)     Post-Doctoral Associates
(6)    Graduate Associates
(7)     Visiting Graduate Associates

These categories enable a wide variety of interested individuals with diverse backgrounds to become involved in Centre activities. Applications will be made to the Membership Committee composed of the Director, one other faculty person, normally the Associate Director, and a graduate student. There will be three deadlines for receipt of applications for affiliation annually: 1 April, 15 October and 15 January. Applications shall be circulated to the Executive Committee for comments prior to the Membership Committee making a decision on the applications. The Membership Committee shall report its decisions to the Executive Committee for the record.

(1) Faculty Associates

Faculty Associates are full-time, part-time, tenure-stream and non-tenure-stream faculty from York who are actively involved in research on Asia or Asian
Diasporas, committed to Centre goals and contribute actively to the life of the Centre.

The designation, Faculty Associate is made for a renewable four-year term. Applicants will be asked to submit to the Membership Committee their curriculum vitae, a statement of their reasons for wanting to be associated with the Centre and of how they will actively contribute to the Centre, and other documents as stated on the YCAR web site.


(2)    Research Associates

Research Associates are individuals other than York faculty, who are associated with universities and other educational institutions, governments, industry, and community, non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations, normally in the GTA or surrounding region, and who are actively involved in research on Asia or Asian Diasporas, committed to Centre goals and contribute actively to the life of the Centre. Research Associates are often affiliated with the Centre for a limited time to work on specific projects.

The designation Research Associate is made for a one-year term. Nominees will be asked to submit to the Membership Committee their application, which includes a curriculum vitae, a statement of their reasons for wanting to be associated with the Centre and of how they will actively contribute to the Centre and other documents as stated on the YCAR web site. The applicant must also ask one YCAR Faculty Associate to submit to the Membership Committee a letter endorsing the application and explaining how the applicant will actively contribute to the life of the Centre. (3)  Visiting Scholar

Visiting Scholars are faculty members from outside universities and other educational institutions or researchers from government, industry, and community, non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations who come to YCAR for short-term periods, normally up to one year.

The length of term of a Visiting Scholar shall be decided on a case-by-case basis and may be renewed at the discretion of the Director in consultation with the Membership Committee.

Nominees will be asked to submit their curriculum vitae, a statement of their reasons for wanting to be associated with the Centre and of how they will actively contribute to the life of the Centre and other documents as stated on the YCAR web site. The applicant must also ask one York faculty member to submit to the Membership Committee a letter endorsing the application and stating a willingness to consult with the applicant during his/her time at York University.


(4) Senior Research Associate

Senior Research Associates are individuals who have made outstanding contributions to research on Asia or Asian Diasporas or to the research aims of the Centre. In addition, retired and emeriti scholars who apply for membership in YCAR shall be automatically considered for Senior Research Associates status.

The length of the term shall be decided on a case-by-case basis and may be renewed by the Membership Committee. Nominees will be asked to submit their curriculum vitae to the Membership Committee. Please see the web site for further information.


(5) Postdoctoral Associate

Post-doctoral Associates are talented researchers who work on projects under the auspices of the Centre and who have been awarded external post-doctoral funding.

The length of the term shall be decided on a case-by-case basis and may be renewed by the Membership Committee.

Nominees will be asked to submit to the Membership Committee their CV and a statement of their reasons for wanting to be associated with the Centre and of how they will actively contribute to the life of the Centre, a description of their post-doctoral research project and other documents as stated on the YCAR web site. The applicant must also arrange to have their PhD dissertation supervisor and one York faculty member submit letters of recommendation to the Membership Committee. The letter from the York faculty member should indicate a willingness to supervise the research of the applicant during his/her time at York University.


(6) Graduate Associate

Graduate Associates are York graduate students engaged in research on Asia or Asian Diasporas and who are committed to the goals of the Centre and contribute actively to the life of the Centre.

Nominees will be asked to submit to the Membership Committee their application, which includes a curriculum vitae, a statement of their reasons for wanting to be associated with the Centre and of how they will actively contribute to the Centre, a description of their Masters or PhD research project and other documents as stated on the YCAR web site.


(7) Visiting Graduate Associate

Visiting Graduate Associates are graduate students from universities other than York and who are actively involved in research on Asia or Asian Diasporas, committed to Centre goals and contribute actively to the life of the Centre.

The length of the term shall be decided by the Membership Committee on a case-by- case basis and may be renewed at by the Membership Committee.

Nominees will be asked to submit to the Membership Committee their curriculum vitae, a statement of their reasons for wanting to be associated with the Centre and of how they will contribute actively to the Centre, a description of their Masters or PhD research project and other documents as stated on the YCAR web site. The applicant must also arrange to have their research supervisor and one York faculty member submit letters of recommendation to the Membership Committee. The letter from the York faculty member should indicate a willingness to consult with the applicant during his/her time at York University.
