Ontario Government SuperBuild Announcement | |||||||||||||||
|
March 13, 2000
On February 22, 2000, the Government of Ontario announced its approval and funding commitment to allow us to proceed with the construction of a new building for the Schulich School of Business and a new building for the York /Seneca Technology Enhanced Learning initiative. In the time since that announcement we have taken measured steps to analyze these commitments. Our process was designed to ensure that these buildings would enhance the quality of the academic experience for students, would be consistent with our academic plans as perceived by the Deans and the University Executive Committee, and could be financed without undue risk through the funds from the SuperBuild Program and private sector commitments. Having undertaken an academic and financial analysis we recommended to the Board Executive Committee that we proceed to the next stage of planning of these three projects and this recommendation was accepted. We remain committed to the initial condition that operating grants be funded at a level that will ensure that the faculty and staff complement will be available to support programmes in these new buildings. The Government of Ontario deserves our thanks for recognizing the strengths and potential of York University's academic plans and SuperBuild proposals. These two new buildings and the renovation of the existing Schulich building are important to our overall plans. We look forward to formally acknowledging the generous support of the Ontario taxpayers and our private benefactors when these buildings are opened. We welcome the opportunity to renovate the Schulich building to provide better space for other programs consistent with advancing our academic objectives and our SuperBuild proposal. No final decisions have been made on this issue but we expect to complete these plans by the end of June. We are also pleased to extend our partnership with Seneca College. This is a venture about which you will hear a great deal more in the months to come. Many people were involved in the development of York's SuperBuild proposal and they deserve our gratitude for their hard work. This is the first important stage in our building program. We remain committed to fulfilling our needs for classrooms, laboratories, a space for our music programme, and all other aspects of our SuperBuild proposals in the foreseeable future. Questions about the SuperBuild program should be directed to the Office of the President. For more information: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca
