Enrolment Information for Certificate in Practical Ethics

It is a requirement of the General Certificate in Practical Ethics that each student who intends to pursue the Certificate must officially enroll in the Certificate and get approval of a member of the Advisory group for the Certificate for their intended course selection.

In order to officially enroll in the Certificate program, each student must register with the Coordinator of the Certificate (currently Professor Alice MacLachlan), and make an appointment with one of the members of the Advisory group for the Certificate.

Members of the Advisory group are:

  • Professor Alice MacLachlan (Coordinator of the Certificate in Practical Ethics): Department of Philosophy, Ross South 418, amacla@yorku.ca, 416-736-2100 ext. 77587
  • Professor Susan Dimock, Philosophy
  • Professor Wesley Cragg, Philosophy and Schulich School of Business
  • Professor Ian Greene, Political Science
  • Professor Peter Penz, Environmental Studies
  • Professor Patricia Kazan, Philosophy
  • Professor David Wiesenthal, Psychology

The Advisor will discuss the intended course selection with students in order to ensure that the student undertakes a coherent and unified cluster of courses tailored to the student’s interests in practical ethics. The enrolment form must be filled in and signed by an Advisor to be valid. A second advising session between the student and Advisor must be held during the student’s final year of study, and the enrolment form completed. A copy of the enrolment form, documenting the first and second advising sessions and signed by the student and Advisor must be sent to the Coordinator after the final advising session. At that time, students should complete the Application for the Awarding of a Certificate form (attached and available as a PDF file from the Philosophy Department’s web site or the Registrar’s web site) and forward it to the Coordinator along with the completed enrolment form. This is a crucial step in the process, because the Coordinator arranges to have the Certificate printed and to have its completion included on the student’s final transcript. This step can only occur if the Coordinator if copied on the file at the time of its completion, if the Coordinator was not the student’s Advisor.
