Novice Central Debating Championships 2009

Our first tournament of the year was a great success! We sent a total of 10 teams, who all made a strong showing in Montreal. A special mention goes to two of our ODS teams, composed of Anna Koppelman and Kyle Reese, and Ben Keen and Craig Garbe, who all made it to the semi-finals! Great job everyone who attended, and a special mention to our judges for the weekend: Maia, Kassie, Rudi, Emmett, Mike, and Sarah.




German Quickie 2009

This past weekend was the first ever German Quickie! It was a great success, with debaters as far as Waterloo and Ottawa making an appearance. Congrats to our top speakers, Aaron Rousseau and Mitchell Gerskup; our top-notch judges, Rudi Lof, Maia Miller, Brent Kettles, and Dash; as well as to our spirit award winners, Kassie Dwarika and Iain Ireland. Thanks to everyone who came out to participate! We look forward to next year!




Debating Death Trudge 2009

At the annual 24-hour Debating Death Trugde (DDT), our debaters debated all night long on silly topics like the contingency plan for alien attacks, pirates vs. ninjas, and how the world should indeed be flat. Among the teams that we sent, Husein and hybrid partner Mitchell made it to the semi-finals, with Husein winning the spirit award! Maia and Alina also won the Family Feud portion of the tournament.




Canadian Parliamentary National Championships 2009

York flew over to Saskatoon to participate in this year's CP Nats, one of the biggest tournaments in Canada. We sent 3 teams: Emmett and Husein, Rudi and Brent, and our novice team Maia and Natalie. Special thanks to our judges Karl, Wajma and Anastasiya. At the tournament, our team of Rudi and Brent made it all the way to semis, with Brent placing among the top 10 speakers.




Leger Cup 2009

The 2009 Leger Cup was held at Trinity College, at the University of Toronto.







British Parliamentary National Championships 2008

We sent 8 teams to Queen's University: Emmett and Husein, Bakhyt and Dylan, Jeric and Mike, Alina and Maia, Kassie and Natalie, Jeremy and Lenci, and representing the Osgoode Debate Society, Brent and Rudi, Adib and Raymond. The team of Rudi and Brent reached the final round and faced Hart House and McGill with the resolution that this house regrets Omar Al-Bashir's indictment.




Inter-College Debating Tournament 2008

This was the first ever Inter-College Debating Tournament hosted by the York Debating Society with Ke-Jia as our Tournament Director. On November 1st, 2008 teams from the colleges of York University faced each other in 5 rounds of intense debate. The team of Gibrian Malicki-Sanchez and Andy Xia from Founders College emerged as the winners of the first IDT!




Public Debate: Culture Clubs

On October 28, 2008 the YDS held a public debate in Vari Hall on the resolution: This house believes that culturually-based student organizations do more harm than good on York's campus. Debating on Government side were Rudi and Natalie while Emmett and Mike debated on side Opposition with Husein as our moderator.





Central Novice Championships 2008

We sent 11 teams to the University of Ottawa: Wajma and Anastasiya, Karl and Tristan, Maia and Alina, Matt and Mohsin, Adrian and Shraddha, Kassie and Gajanii, Ke-Jia and Chris T., Stephen and Ahmed, Dylan and Natalie, Chris E. and Adib, and George and Raymond, with Adib, George and Raymond representing the Osgoode Debate Society. Natalie Livshits emerged ranked 17th top speaker out of over 150 debaters from all over Ontario and Quebec! Emmett, Husein, Rudi and Brent also went as judges.



York Leadership Conference 2008

YDS held two workshops at the YLC conference May 2-3 2008, one for public speaking and the other for a show debate. Big thanks to Husein, Jeremy, Ke-Jia and Rudi for helping and Amir and Emmett for getting the spot with the SC&LD!





Canadian National Championships 2008

At Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia March 2008. Congratulations to the teams of David + Jeric, Jeremy + Emmett and Amir + Mike Payton, who did extremely well, each facing very stiff competition. Amir and Mike Payton placed as the 10th top Canadian team, falling a mere 0.5 speaker point from the quarter finals. Individually, Mike ranked as the 25th and Amir the 8th in Canada!




Seagram 2008

The Seagram cup was held at the University of Waterloo/Wilfred Laurier March 7-9 2008. Rudi and Husein won the Seagram Cup Invitational with Rudi being the top speaker and top public speaker. Bakhyt won top novice speaker!

North American Championships 2008

Carleton University played host to a memorable event this January in the North American Debating Championships. York's novice team of Jeremy Larkins and Emmett Soldati made the club proud by qualifying to the Novice Finals. After a very well debated round on the use of torture, Jeremy and Emmett ended up ranking as the second top novice team in the continent. Congratulations!




World University Debating Championships 2008

Assumption University's 2008 World University Debating Championships was the largest and arguably one of the most competitive collegiate debate tournaments ever held. The YDS was proud to have sent one team and two judges to this event in Bangkok, Thailand. This is one of the most memorable academic events our contingent has ever been experienced and we look forward to being competitive in future international tournaments. Rudi Lof and Amir Mohareb debated through nine heated British Parliamentary rounds against some of the top teams in the world, including Harvard, Monash, Sydney, Oxford and Cambridge. By the end of the tournament we proved to be the third top Canadian institution with a ranking of 36 out of more than 400.

Chancellor's 2007

The York Debating Society sent three teams to compete at the Chancellor's Cup tournament at Queen's University. As always, this tournament was well-run, and our debaters had an enjoyable weekend filled with debates. Congrats to: Lisa, Dave, Mike Payton, Lenci, Emmett, Jeric, and special thanks to Shawn and Jeremy for judging!





Guindon 2007

The YDS proudly sent a strong contingent to compete in the Guindon Cup in our nation's capital. The teams were Andaleep + Sundeep (read: Sundaleeb), Mike Payton and Robyn, Michael Xiao and Jon Payton, Fay and Dave (who almost made the novice beak) and Rudi and Amir (who were one point away from breaking to the semis).




Central Novice Championships 2007

Central Canadian Novice Championships took place at Osgoode Hall right at York University. Our debaters did amazing and everyone learnt a lot. World University Championships 2007

From December 27- Jan 3, 2007, the YDS was represented at the Worlds University Debating Championships (WUDC) in Vancouver, BC. Rudi Lof and Amir Mohareb worked very hard preparing and debating at the tournament and had a blast representing York on the world stage!




Guelph Invitational November 2006

Unversity of Guelph's BP Invitational last November. Congratulations has to go out to Rudi and Amir for being finalists and both ranking in the top ten speakers! Also to Rudi for placing 2nd in the Public Speaking competition. Our group had an awesome time thanks to the great tournament organizers.
