Debating International Relations

International Relations (IR) debates can be tough, especially for new debaters. Many debaters fear getting stuck with a resolution which they know nothing about. The most obvious solution to this would be to read up and widen your knowledge base of important international issues. However, no matter how much research one does, one cannot possibly be an expert in every single international issue. Fortunately, there are some common themes that underpin most international issues regardless of how obscure they may be.

Debating IR, written by Rudi Lof, outlines the basic principles underlying the common themes and explains how to apply them in an IR round even without extensive knowledge of the particular issue at hand. The guide also identifies some of the most common examples that can be used as references in specific debates. Download the guide here.
