Today@York Evolution of curatorial and medical practices of Dr. Koan Jeff Baysa

The Visual Arts Speaker Series presents Dr. Koan Jeff Baysa, curator, writer, art collector and practicing physician in New York and Los Angeles. The head of the new York office and director of International Projects at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Beijing, Baysa is also editor of the online art magazine art::pulse. In this free, public presentation, he will discuss the evolution of his concurrent curatorial and medical practices. In room 338 Goldfarb Centre for Fine Arts, 12-1:30pm.

Open Forum on the new Student Code of Conduct at York

A working committee is in the process of developing a new Student Code of Conduct for York University to be implemented by Fall 2006. The committee has organized, through York’s Office of Student Conduct & Dispute Resolution, a series of open forums as the first stage of the consultation process with the York community. Before attending one of these scheduled meetings, York students, faculty and staff are asked to complete a short online survey which will help organizers engage participants in open dialogue at the forum. (Upcoming open forums are scheduled for March 1, 8, 14.) The Tuesday, Feb. 28, forum will be held in Room 313, York Student Centre, 11am-2:30pm.

"The Natural Selection of Moral Conduct"

York Professor Jagdish Hattiangadi will present the next Brownbag Research Seminar. A member of the Philosophy Department, Faculty of Arts, Hattiangadi will attempt to reconcile the fact that we are products of evolution by natural selection, with the fact that when we act morally, we act typically out of respect for a rule or principle. Jazz with Lorne Lofsky

The Music at Midday series presents a free concert with guitarist Lorne Lofsky and his jazz trio. In the Recital Hall, Accolade East, 12:30-1:30pm.

Minibyte: Paragraph Formatting in Word 2002

The Training & Development unit of York’s Human Resource Services offers free one-hour minibyte sessions for York employees. Registration is NOT required. See the HR Services Web site for upcoming minibytes. This intermediate skill-level session on Tuesday, Feb. 28, will be held in the Microcomputer Training Lab, 043 Central Square, 1-2pm.

JAZZ.FM91 recording session with the York Jazz Ensemble

The York University Jazz Ensemble, directed by York music professor and renowned jazz saxophonist Mike Murley, will be recorded for a future broadcast on JAZZ.FM91. The recording session is open to the public and free of charge. In the Recital Hall, Accolade East, 2:30pm.

Distinguished Lecture Series presents Idil Boran

A guest lecture will be given by Professor Idil Boran from the Philosophy Department, University of Quebec at Montreal, on "The Advantage of Playing Fair: Public Goods and the Distribution of Burdens & Benefits in Cooperative Schemes". Presented by the Atkinson Distinguished Lecture Series, the public event will be held in the Harry Leith Room, 004 Atkinson Bldg., 4-7pm.

Musicians in Ordinary: "Over the Mountains: The Spread of the New Music"

Featuring violinist Chris Verrette with the modern Musicians in Ordinary, soprano Hallie Fishel and lutenist/guitarist John Edwards, the program will include works by Marini, Biber and Sances. Presented by Winters College Office of the Master, this musical presentation will be held in Winters SCR, 021 Winters College, at 4pm.

Black History Month presentation by the School of Social Work

York’s School of Social Work is hosting a special seminar in recognition of Black History Month, with two guest speakers. M. Jacqui Alexander, professor of women’s studies and gender studies at the University of Toronto, will give a presentation on "The National Security State and Other Fictions"; followed by Tina Lopes, an organizational development consultant, facilitator and mediator, with a discussion about "Transforming Organizations: Challenging Racism and Remaining Employed". A discussion will follow the presentations. This public event will be in Founders Assembly Hall, 152 Founders College, 7-9:30pm.

Expressions of Healing - Eco Art & Media Festival 2006

York’s Faculty of Environmental Studies presents the 12th annual Eco Art & Media Festival, Feb. 28- March 5, focuses on revival of the spirit, rejuvenated bodies and restoration of the mind. The festival launches at 6pm tonight in the lounge of the HNES Bldg with a tribute to the lives of two major figures in the development of the Faculty, Professors John Livingston and Michel Chevalier. The festival features a variety of events enable healing to reveal itself, including performance, food-culture, visual art, the written word, community, medicinal forms, and relationships with people and the land. (For the complete story, see the Feb. 23 issue of YFile.) Most events will be held on York’s Keele campus (in the HNES Bldg., TEL Bldg. and Centre for Film & Theatre), with a couple held off-campus. Weight Watchers at Work program

You can still join the new Weight Watchers at Work program which runs from Jan. 10 to May 9. The program offers the support you need to learn good eating habits, shed some pounds and become more fit and healthy. For more information visit the Centre for Wellness Research & Education at York Web site. Meetings are held in the Vanier SCR, lower level Vanier College, on Tuesdays, 12-1pm.

Drawing Area Show

Feb. 27-March 3, see the work of York visual arts students, in the Drawing Area Show. Admission is free to The Gallery in the lobby of the Goldfarb Centre for Fine Arts, Monday to Friday, 9:30am-4:30pm.

etcetera: Visual Arts Student Association Show @ Zacks

To March 10, see an exhibition of art work from some of the most talented students on campus, at the Samuel J. Zacks Gallery. The gallery is located in 109 Stong College and is open Monday to Friday, 11:30am-4:30pm.

Play Dirty Bingo @ the Underground

Have some fun at the Underground with Shirley’s sarcastic comments, jokes and twisted observations. Dirty Bingo is a free event played on the last Tuesday of each month at the Underground, York Student Centre, at 9:30pm.
