A variety of events are being held to welcome York's new & returning students and kick-start the 2005-2006 academic year.
Frosh Week
(Welcome Week)
Aug. 29 to Sept. 6 - a week of social and academic activities.
International Orientation Aug. 31 - a day of activities designed to help new internationalstudents at York.
Frosh Frenzie
Sept. 5 - an outdoor carnival in the morning, followed by a 2pm football game between Waterloo and the York Lions.
York Day
Sept. 6 - a one-day university-wide "orientation finale" for all new York students.
Mature & Transfer Orientation
Sept. 6 - organized with the specific needs of mature & transfer students in mind. At Michelangelo's Restaurant, Atkinson Bldg., 3:30-7:30pm.

York student wins
gold in Turkey
Atkinson student Ohenewa Akuffo (right) won a gold medal at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey last week beating opponents from Korea, Japan and Ukraine in the Games' first-ever women's wrestling event. 
York welcomes return of tuition grants
It just got easier to go to university if you’re a student who’s short on cash. A new program announced last week will benefit up to 16,000 low-income Ontario students who are about to enter their first year of college or university..
Four profs make TVO Top-30
Four of York’s most popular professors - including an astronomer and an expert in rock and roll - have been named among the top 30 in the run-up to a competition to find Ontario’s best lecturers that will be aired on TV Ontario in the fall. The four - John Dwyer, Paul Delaney, Rob Bowman and Dalton Kehoe - were nominated by students and then selected by a panel of judges in a process conducted by the program’s producers. 
Fine Arts grad wins India film award
In mid-July, York film graduate Mohan Krishna Indraganti (MFA '00) found himself under the spotlight of the glowing Indian sun. His debut feature film, Grahanam (The Eclipse), won the prestigious Indira Gandhi Award (Golden Lotus) for the Best First Film by a Director at the 52nd National Awards in India. 
Seven York students vie for Canadian Student Film Award
A total of seven films by recent graduates and alumni of York's Film & Video program are in the running. If one of them wins, it will be the third year in a row a York grad has taken top honors at the 36-year-old festival. 
Enter your art video in AGYU's fall student screening
The Art Gallery of York University is seeking video submissions by students and emerging artists for a series of screenings that will take place at the AGYU on Sept. 12, 13, 19 and 20. This is an open call (no set thematic) but works should be eight minutes or less must be dropped off at the AGYU office, N201 Ross Bldg., by Sept. 1, 2005. 
York researcher loves his corn
Okay, this may sound a bit corny but...York University researcher Stephen Wright is part of a team of scientists that has identified the genes responsible for the tasty corn we love to eat. A thousand years ago, it wasn't quite so tasty.
