CAMPUS NOTES

Call for applications: Fall 2005 Convocation
York’s Office of Ceremonials, Special Events & Community Relations is seeking students for part-time work during Fall 2005 Convocation. Students who are enrolled at York University and who are interested in applying to work during Convocation should bring a current resume to the Office of Ceremonials, Special Events & Community Relations located in North 904, Ross Building to fill out an application.

Applications will be accepted Tuesday, Sept. 27, noon to 2pm. Available shifts include Friday, Oct. 14, from 7am to 7pm, and Saturday, Oct.15, from 7am to 3pm. Successful applicants will be required to undergo training on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 9am to 4pm.

Annual fire alarm and protection equipment testing
The annual fire alarm and protection equipment testing for the Keele campus begins today. The housing and apartment buildings will be the first on the schedule. Other building management will be contacted well in advance as soon as their schedules are available. The device testing in the elevator hoist ways will be done during reading week in February.

Here are some factors that may coincide or interfere with your daily activities or special events:

  • Acquiring access to the fire alarm initiating devices (excluding ceiling sprinklers)
A technician may require access to the ceiling device in your workplace for about 15 minutes per device. A ladder or mobile lifting equipment will be used to reach the device depending on the ceiling height.
  • Test hours
Tests will be conducted between the hours of 7:30am and 5pm on weekdays.
  • Audible and visual alarm testing
Tests in audible and visual modes will take place after 9am in residences and before 8am in the commercial buildings and non-residential buildings. The test will be in silent mode otherwise. The audible test will be periodic and last long enough to locate the notification appliances such as bells, horns and speakers.

Posting
Notification of testing will be posted in each building one day in advance of the test. Science buildings will have a 3-day notification period.

Rescheduling
In the event of a conflict of the test schedule with classes in progress, special events or meetings, a request for test rescheduling can be made to Ken Wong, manager, building code/fire protection, at ext. 33937 or kwong@fbo.yorku.ca. Facilities Services staff thanks everyone for their cooperation and assistance and apologizes for any inconvenience.
