How York students
benefit from
the United Way
By the nature of their roles as academics and administrators, York University faculty and staff give back to students every day – in the classroom, the lab, the library, on the football field etc. Yet many members of the York community reach beyond their professional roles to give back to students financially through initiatives such as regular fundraising campaigns. The funds raised are used to enhance student financial aid, University Libraries, research and innovation, the art gallery, student services or an individual Faculty or department. 
Ontario announces increased financial support for York students
York University has welcomed Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s announcement of a new trust fund that will increase financial support for postsecondary students. The Ontario Trust for Student Support will match private and corporate cash donations used by colleges and universities to set up endowment funds. 
Glendon on the leading edge in classroom technology
VOLT, TFO's newsmagazine for francophone and francophile teenagers, will air a program in the next few weeks about a new technology being piloted in Glendon and Osgoode's classrooms: the so-called "clicker" or personal response system . 
Celebrating in song
York University’s Music Department will showcase the glory of the human voice with a series of four choral concerts, all directed by York Professor Lisette Canton, taking place Tuesday, Wednesday and Nov. 21. 
Las Nubes Coffee Kiosk opens Tuesday
The “grand opening” of the Las Nubes Coffee Kiosk in Central Square will be held this week, with the official ceremony at 10am on Tuesday. The opening will feature hourly prizes of “coffee for a week” plus free bookmarks. The Kiosk sells only York's Las Nubes brand coffee from Costa Rica. 
Reviewing the Maclean's University Rankings report
Maclean's magazine has released its annual "University Rankings" report. In the comprehensive category, York slipped two spots overall but got high marks for the quality of its faculty and for its financial aid. 
Jazz envoys bring York influence to an international audience
The Steve Koven Trio represented both Canada and York at international cultural events this week. Their tour included a series of concerts and a public presentation in Trinidad and Barbados, where they were invited to perform by the Canadian High Commissions in both countries. 
Philosopher and publisher supported York in early days
Prof. John W. Yolton (far left) , LLD, who was a world expert on philosopher John Locke and once served as acting president of York, died Nov. 3 in New Jersey. Beland Honderich, LLD, former publisher of the Toronto Star who helped establish the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies, died Nov. 8 in Vancouver.
Celebrating the life and work of Miriam Waddington
A star of the Canadian literary scene, Miriam Waddington, professor emeritus of English at York University and a life member of the League of Canadian Poets, died on March 3, 2004, in Vancouver at 86. Friends and admirers celebrated her life last week.  
Ambassador speaks at Glendon on Canada and EU
John McNee, Canadian ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg and York alumnus (BA '73, Glendon), was warmly welcomed back to his old school, when he came to outline his views on the future of the European Union and Canada's relationship with it. 
York honours five alumni trailblazers
The leadership and achievements of five York University alumni were recognized at the annual Bryden Alumni Awards dinner held Nov. 9 at The Design Exchange in Toronto. 

Osgoode faculty council adopts new strategic plan
Osgoode Hall Law School's Faculty Council has unanimously approved a new strategic plan to guide the development of the law school over the next five years. 
Meet York's United Way Leadership Campaign co-chairs
Eileen Fischer and Mike Graham share a very special bond. The pair are this year’s leadership campaign co-chairs for York University’s 2005 United Way Campaign. Both have a deep commitment to ensuring that York University reaches its campaign goal of $185,000. 
Symposium seeks to reduce Canada's vulnerability to disasters
With experts predicting a flu pandemic on the horizon, York Professor David Etkin says Canadians need a comprehensive disaster reduction platform – an item that will be high on the agenda at an upcoming disaster-management symposium co-organized by York. 
Researchers receive renewed commitment from CRC
York Professors Leah Vosko and Nantel Bergeron received good news from the Canada Research Council last week. The federal government announced it was renewing its funding to the two Canada Research Chairs, which will help continue Vosko's research in feminist political economy and Bergeron's into mathematics. 
International Education Week celebration continues all week
York is showcasing its international education programs this week as part of International Education Week, Nov. 14-18. The week is designed to showcase the significant contribution that international education makes in preparing Canadians for the global world and supports Canada's efforts on the international stage.
