York creates
a new
Faculty
of Health
York University will create a unique new Faculty of Health designed to respond to the growing need for innovative, interdisciplinary education and research on health. On Dec. 5, York's Board of Governors voted to establish the new Faculty on July 1, 2006, bringing together several existing disciplines into a broad new entity. In the new Faculty, "interdisciplinary" will mean more than the linking of health specialties. It will include exposure to a range of disciplinary perspectives on health, from the sciences, social sciences, nursing, management and administration, humanities and informatics.


Global TV launches election road show at Glendon
On the evening of Dec. 5, Global TV's "National News" chose to launch its election road show at York before a forum of about 40 students. Gemini Award-winning national anchor Kevin Newman delivered the news of the day, then asked the students about voter apathy and the youth vote.

Grad student wins $25,000 arts award
Jennifer Lefort, a York University graduate student in visual arts, will soon be off to the major art hubs of Europe – including London, Paris and Berlin – as the recipient of the $25,000 Joe Plaskett Foundation Award.

Marsden participates in Nobel Peace Prize events
York University President & Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden headed overseas last week to speak at a summit for global leaders – a lead-up to the conferring of the Nobel Peace Prize which took place on Dec. 10. Marsden took part in a panel on "Connected Communiites".

York is U wraps up a busy fall term
The intrepid students organized a charity food, toy and clothing drive and a series of movie nights, while the York is U Kindness Crew distributed transit tokens to students in bus line-ups on the Keele campus.

York graduate student receives a Canada-US Fulbright award
York University graduate student Geoffrey Alan Rhodes has been named a 2005 Canada-US Fulbright Fellow, an honour reserved for a select few in Canada and the US. Rhodes, a graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, studied film and has recently begun a PhD in Communication & Culture at York.

Beware of "phishing" e-mail scams
A recent crop of "phishing" scam e-mail messages has been targeting York University addresses as spammers attempt to gather free e-mail accounts.

A very special 'thank-you'
Donors, faculty members, students and other guests braved Toronto's first snowstorm to attend the second annual "Red and White Thank You Night" at York. The event provided an opportunity for students and members of York’s administration to thank York donors who fund pan-University bursaries, awards and student leadership opportunities.

Glendon profs hold an informal Conversazione on research
Lunchtime at Glendon on Nov. 24 offered another in the popular presentations titled Conversazione, a series of informal lectures given by members of Glendon's faculty about their current research and related topics.
