CAMPUS NOTES

Forums on new student code of conduct begin Monday

The Office of Student Conduct & Dispute Resolution at York has partnered with key University stakeholders to establish a working committee to develop a new student code of conduct. The committee has a mandate to consult the York community to develop the student code of conduct for implementation by Fall 2006. The development of a new code of conduct for students will enable the University community to respond to ongoing, changing and new student conduct issues in a consistent and fair manner. This large undertaking will result in a streamlining of the process that governs student conduct and involves consultation with students, faculty and staff.

There will be a host of opportunities for the York University community to get involved. Posters and online announcements will be used to ensure that the community is aware of upcoming opportunities. In the first stage of the consultation process, the committee will be organizing a series of open forums and “town hall” meetings (see below for dates and locations) and will be using an online poll to engage stakeholders in open dialogue.

York's students, faculty and staff are asked to complete the online survey, after which York University students (only) will receive a ballot to win a free 4GB iPod Nano. The second stage of the consultation process will provide the York community with an opportunity to comment on a draft code of conduct for students.

Summer 2006 course information now available online

York University’s Office of the Registrar has released the summer 2006 (SU06) course timetables. Students can now view course timetables online for all faculties except Osgoode Hall Law School, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Master of Environmental Studies (MES) courses offered by the Faculty of Environmental Studies. Graduate studies and MES courses will be released at a later date. Osgoode does not offer summer courses. To access the course timetables, go to the York Courses Web site.

The enrolment guide for SU06 has also been released online. The enrolment guide Web site contains information for undergraduate students who would like to enrol in SU06 courses. Instructions for using the enrolment system, SU06 sessional dates and refund dates, and degree credit exclusion tables for students who would like to enrol in courses outside of their Faculty can be found on the Undergraduate Enrolment Guide Web site.

In addition to the course timetables and the enrolment guide, the enrolment access dates and times have also been released. Each undergraduate student who has a SU06 sessional activity in the program enrolment system has been given a specific date and time when he or she can begin to use the enrolment and registration system for SU06. Students should access the Find out when you can enrol link which is available on each of the Office of the Registrar Web pages and on the Current Students information Web page.

Ombuds office seeks proposals
for International Women's day events

York's Office of the Ombudsperson & Centre for Human Rights is sponsoring a series of community events over a period of two weeks to honour International Women's Day and the Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The 2006 theme is “Beyond Politically Correct: Challenging Sexism and Racism” and the March 8 - 21 Planning Committee, made up of students and administrators, has a fund allocated for community initiatives that support this theme.

Historically, a large coalition of representatives (consisting of students, faculty, administrators and community members) made up the planning committee and coordinated activities. This year, to ensure as many voices as possible are heard, the committee is inviting submissions from the York community to explore issues around challenging and surviving sexism, racism and other forms of oppression. The committee is centralizing the process so that clubs and organizations are able to get widespread and diverse promotion of their events. If you do not require funding but would like the committee to promote your event, complete the event information form so that the committee can assist you with advertising your event.

The deadline for funding applications is Feb. 23. Funding criteria and an application form are available at www.yorku.ca/ombudsor by sending an e-mail request to Debbie Burke-Benn, senior adviser, education & advancement, Office of the Ombudsperson & Centre for Human Rights, at burke@yorku.ca.

Changes to Hwy. 407 East GO Bus service

Schedule adjustments to some weekday GO Bus westbound express trips from Scarborough Town Centre to York University went into effect on Feb. 6. GO riders should check the new timetable for specific trip details. New Hwy. 407 Express GO Bus service Web schedules are now available at www.gotransit.com.

Changes to GO Bus schedules during York and McMaster reading weeks

GO has also made some changes to its Hwy. 407 GO Bus schedules during York’s reading week, Feb. 13-17, and McMaster University’s reading week, Feb. 20-24. Check the new Hwy. 407 Express GO Bus service timetables, dated Feb. 4, 2006, for details.

York and Seneca@York GO customers: Save time and money

GO riders can save time and help avoid bus delays by purchasing their single-ride ticket or day pass before they get on the bus. Already having a ticket or pass makes boarding the bus quick and easy, and speeds up service for all passengers. GO tickets and passes are available at these locations:

  • Inkblotz in York Lanes on the York University Keele campus
  • Your local GO Train station or GO Bus terminal*
  • Your local GO Transit ticket agency*

*check the GO Transit Web site under Stations and Terminals for locations and hours

Single-ride tickets and day passes are good for occasional riders but, for regular Hwy. 407 GO Bus passengers, the discounted 10-ride tickets or monthly passes are a better option. A 10-ride ticket has no expiry date – just stamp it on the bus with the date and time to make it good for travel. A monthly pass gives riders unlimited travel between two points in one calendar month. Simply show it to the bus driver when boarding.

Full-time students can save even more on a 10-ride ticket or monthly pass by applying for the GO Transit Student Identification Card and benefiting from additional student fare discounts. York students can apply for the card online. Applications are also available on the Keele campus in the Parking & Transportation Office, 222 William Small Centre, and at any Seneca College campus.

For fare information, use the fare calculator on the GO Transit Web site under Fares and Tickets, or call 416-869-3200.

York Secretariat launches new Web site

The York University Secretariat now has a newly expanded and redesigned Web site. The new site offers a number of improvements, including site-wide navigation, a site search and a home page with links to information on the most commonly accessed topics. The redesign of the Web site is a first step in the reformation of the policy framework aimed towards greater clarity and enhanced support of governance.

The new site is accessible from its current URL on the York Web site, which is http://www.yorku.ca/secretariat/.

York University departments with Web sites containing links to the University or York Senate policies and procedures should update those links to the relevant page on the new site. In the meantime, there is a redirect from the former policy and procedures pages to the new main policies and procedures Web site.
