A capella group leads York Juno nominees

York’s Music Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, will be well represented at the Juno awards again this year, as no less than 10 artists from York have been nominated for the awards being presented in Halifax on Sunday, April 2. This year’s nominees include four graduates, two faculty members, three former students and an honorary doctorate recipient. A Capella quartet Cadence, which includes three alumnae from the Faculty of Fine Arts, has been nominated for Vocal Jazz Album of the year for its latest album Twenty for One. The group features Dylan Bell (BFA '95), Ross Lynde (BFA ‘00) and Carl Berger (BFA ‘99) along with Kevin Fox. Other York nominees include rappers Kardinal Offishal and k-os.

Family's donation enhances Islamic studies
The generosity of the Lakhani family and their involvement with York University was celebrated at a reception at the Noor Cultural Centre in Toronto. The Lakhanis, in response to the growing demand for courses and scholarly research on Islam, have donated $1 million to establish the Noor Chair in Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Arts. 
$3M Ontario Research Chair slated for Schulich School of Business
A new Ontario Research Chair in Economics and Cross Cultural Studies, located within York University’s Schulich School of Business, will lead an interdisciplinary research program focused on delivering cutting-edge strategies to increase the competitiveness, innovation and productivity of Ontario’s small and medium-sized enterprises.

Two key diplomatic posts have York connections
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced diplomatic appointments last week involving two individuals with strong connections to York University. York alumnus John McNee (BA ’73) has been appointed ambassador and permanent representative of Canada to the United Nations. York honorary doctor of laws recipient, Michael Wilson, has been appointed ambassador of Canada to the United States.
