York's Faculty of Health launches its new Web site

York University's newly created Faculty of Health will be established on July 1, 2006. The new Faculty was approved by the York University Senate in November 2005 and by the Board of Governors in December 2005. The Faculty of Health is York's first new Faculty since 1971.

The units that will form the Faculty of Health are: the School of Health Policy & Management, the School of Kinesiology and Health Science, the School of Nursing, and the Departments of Psychology (Arts and Atkinson).

A new Web site with links to other related sites has now been launched. Information about the units that will form the Faculty of Health, Senate documents, announcements, frequently asked questions for current students, progress reports from the Interim Executive, and information on the search for the inaugural dean of the Faculty of Health are accessible on the site.

The new site can be viewed at: http://www.health.yorku.ca/.

Blood donor clinic this week
celebrates 20 years of giving

For 20 years, York students, faculty, and staff have been rolling up their sleeves to help others by donating blood on during collection drives on York’s Keele campus. The first blood drive took place in 1986 in the Masters Dining Hall of Stong College. Twenty years later, York is still sharing the gift of life.

If you are considering the gift of life through a blood donation, Canadian Blood Services will be on campus this week, from noon to 4pm, today until Thursday, and from 9:30am to 1:30pm, on Friday. The clinic will take place in Central Square - Ross Building.

There are many reasons for giving blood. Currently, only 3.5 per cent of eligible Canadians do so. Patients in hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area use at least 650 to 700 units of blood each day. Cancer patients use an average of eight units of blood products each week during the course of their treatments. What would it take to make you give blood?

For more information on how to become a donor, or to schedule an opportunity to donate during one of their many clinics throughout the community, visit the Canadian Blood Services Web site or call 1-888-2-DONATE.

This blood donor clinic operated by Canadian Blood Services is hosted by Health Education & Promotion, located within the Centre for Student Community & Leadership Development.

Thinking of teaching abroad?

Thinking of teaching abroad? You might want to take this new certificate course in international education first. It takes only two weekends in May and will prepare you well for your overseas experience.

Offered by York’s Faculty of Education over two weekends – May 6-7 and 13-14 – the non-degree certificate program covers more than classroom issues.

It offers:

  • a chance to examine your motives for wanting to work overseas;
  • an international perspective on educational policy and practices;
  • ways to make your experience a positive rather than a negative one;
  • advice on managing your finances;
  • ways to overcome cultural shock;
  • a list of overseas teaching opportunities;
  • an understanding the link between teaching and social justice issues;
  • an exploration of debates and controversies over the role and responsibilities of educators from the North working overseas, including those relating to colonialism and post-colonialism.

Register by April 21 online. For more information, call 416-736-5003, e-mail or visit the Professional Development for Educators Web site.

Student tax forms now available on the Web

York students, both current and previously registered, can print their own T2202A and T4A tax forms from the Web.

The online T2202A is the government-approved form which shows how much tuition students have paid for the prior calendar year, and illustrates the Education Credits for the period. These forms are not mailed; students can access their forms for 2005 or for prior years from the Web by clicking here.

The T4A form reflects any scholarships or bursaries students have received from York. Hard copies of the T4A has been mailed to eligible student to the address on their York student record. If for any reason students require duplicate forms, they can print them by clicking here.

These forms are password protected, behind Passport York, and only the student will be able to print the forms for their own use, for their parents or accountants, as needed. The forms are available in both English and French.

In addition, T4 forms, which reflect any income students have earned at York, are sent through Human Resources, and are not yet available online.

Staff who have questions about the administration of tax forms, or the relevant policies and procedures, should contact Lee Smith, Student Financial Services, by e-mail.

Final forum on York's student code of conduct

The Office of Student Conduct & Dispute Resolution at York has partnered with key University stakeholders to establish a working committee to develop a new student code of conduct. The committee has a mandate to consult the York community to develop the student code of conduct for implementation by Fall 2006. The development of a new code of conduct for students will enable the University community to respond to ongoing, changing and new student conduct issues in a consistent and fair manner. This large undertaking will result in a streamlining of the process that governs student conduct and involves consultation with students, faculty and staff.

There will be a host of opportunities for the York University community to get involved. Posters and online announcements will be used to ensure that the community is aware of upcoming opportunities. In the first stage of the consultation process, the committee will be organizing a series of open forums and "town hall" meetings and will be using an online poll to engage stakeholders in open dialogue.

York's students, faculty and staff are asked to complete the online survey, after which York University students (only) will receive a ballot to win a free 4GB iPod Nano. The second stage of the consultation process will provide the York community with an opportunity to comment on a draft code of conduct for students.

  • The final open forum on the new student code of conduct will take place Tuesday, March 14, 5 to 8pm in
    Paul Delaney Gallery, Bethune College.

During strike at Seneca,
York U continues to operate as usual

York University has issued the following statement on the strike at Ontario community colleges:
