York University offers new all-in-one student card

This fall York is introducing a new all-in-one student photo ID card. The single YU-card (pronounced you-card) will do triple duty as a sessional, library and meal-plan card – and won’t expire after one session. Eventually it will be the only card a student will ever need.

The card is nothing new to residence students, who made the change from the YorkCard to the YU-card in January. This fall, all other York students will receive the new YU-cards.

To avoid long line-ups this fall for the new card, students are being asked to submit their photo now online or have one taken at the YU-card Office on the Keele campus. The office is located in Room 119, William Small Centre, and open Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm. Those who submit their photo by April 28 will get a chance to win one of three Apple iPods.

The YU-card replaces the York Card. It will eliminate the need for sessional identification cards. And eventually it will also provide access to York athletic facilities and retail and vending services. It costs nothing -- except $20 to replace a lost one.

The YU-card will be ready to pick up in August 2006. Dates and locations will be posted via Notebox (through Passport York) and on the Web. Students must present one piece of photo ID to pick up the YU-card. To find out more, visit the YU-card Office or e-mail yucard@yorku.ca.

Students can now apply for the 2006
Millennium National Excellence In-course Awards

Determined to build a better world. Bristling with new ideas. A budding leader. Fully engaged in the community. Driven to achieve academic excellence. Does this describe a student you know? If so, the person may qualify for one of the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation's Millennium Excellence National In-course Awards.

Millennium Excellence National In-course Awards support tomorrow's leaders – post-secondary students who are committed to turning visionary ideas into reality. Awards of $4,000 to $5,000 will enable them to continue improving their community, implementing new ideas and maintaining a solid academic record. These awards are not loans; they do not have to be repaid, and will not increase student debt. A total of 46 York University students will be eligible this year to receive these national awards.

The application period for the 2006 Millennium National Excellence In-course Awards is now open. This year York University is participating in a pilot project with the Millennium Foundation in which York students can apply online.

For detailed information and a link to the online application visit the Student Financial Services Web page.

Information sessions are being held on Keele campus in the Accolade East building on the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, April 19, 5 - 6:30pm, Room 005
  • Monday, May 8, 12 - 1pm, Room 005

The same information will be provided at all the sessions. Potential applicants are advised to review the information on the Web site before attending the information sessions.

Student tax forms now available on the Web

York students, both current and previously registered, can print their own T2202A and T4A tax forms from the Web.

The online T2202A is the government-approved form which shows how much tuition students have paid for the prior calendar year, and illustrates the Education Credits for the period. These forms are not mailed; students can access their forms for 2005 or for prior years from the Web by clicking here.

The T4A form reflects any scholarships or bursaries students have received from York. Hard copies of the T4A has been mailed to eligible student to the address on their York student record. If for any reason students require duplicate forms, they can print them by clicking here.

These forms are password protected, behind Passport York, and only the student will be able to print the forms for their own use, for their parents or accountants, as needed. The forms are available in both English and French.

In addition, T4 forms, which reflect any income students have earned at York, are sent through Human Resources, and are not yet available online.

Staff who have questions about the administration of tax forms, or the relevant policies and procedures, should contact Lee Smith, Student Financial Services, by e-mail.
