York is U celebrates volunteers
after year-end stress-busting

York's student spirit organization, York is U, ended the winter term with a burst of activity designed to reduce stress before exams, celebrate York's 47th birthday and honour its volunteers. "With everything from free massages to free cake and loot bags and the election of a new executive, York is U's events demonstrated why the group has been so successful in encouraging student participation in campus life," said Jeremy Greenberg, York is U coordinator. Plus – Boffo movie nights: York is U went Hollywood this year with the lauch of Movie Night - every-other-Friday screenings of popular films, complete with free popcorn and that old-time theatre experience.


BC Lions draft York’s Foley fourth overall
York Lions defensive linemen Ricky Foley was selected fourth overall by the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League draft held April 20. He's the second-highest pick in York history.

York film grads set to fly high across Canada
Hero worship and the desire to be a superhero in our own lives is the premise of the feature film, Sidekick (2005), created by three York film alumni. Embracing the importance of creative collaboration, this dynamic York trio will be touring to screenings of the film at cinemas across Canada this summer.

Osgoode team places in top 10 at prestigious Vis moot
For the fourth year in a row, a team of students from York’s Osgoode Hall Law School has placed in the top 10 at the Vis Moot in Vienna, Austria. The Osgoode team advanced to the "round of 16" and finished tied with seven other law schools for ninth place.

Nobel Prize-winning physicist will speak at York
Internationally renowned physicist William D. Phillips, who has pioneered new techniques to chill atoms to extremely low temperatures, will speak at York on Tuesday as part of the Physics and Astronomy Graduate Executive (PAGE) Colloquia. Phillips shared the 1997 Nobel Laureate in Physics.

York's chancellor speaks about Northern Ireland's troubles
To establish peace, different sides in a conflict must learn the art of compromise said York University Chancellor Peter Cory at the annual John Holmes Lecture at York’s Glendon College. A retired Supreme Court of Canada judge, Cory spoke about his experience in Northern Ireland as an independent investigator into allegations of official collusion in six murder cases.

'Shareable feelings' promote infant development
A study by York University researchers has found that infants between one and three months old develop more rapidly when adults refrain from imitating their noises and facial expressions, and socialize with them instead.

Baldly going where they've gone before
York Campus security officers will join the line up at Yorkdale April 29 for the "shear" pleasure of getting their heads shaved to raise money for a worthy cause – Cops for Cancer. About 100 community police officers are expected for the annual shearing.

York leads national research project on disability rights
A woman in a wheelchair is hit by her caregiver but she has no way to tell someone and has no power to fire her. That is just one type of human rights violation that a nationwide research project, led by York Professor Marcia Rioux, will monitor and record.

Former Atkinson dean named president of Ontario's tech university
Ronald Bordessa, former dean of York’s Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies, has been named president of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). He will become one of four presidents of Canadian universities who gained major administrative experience at York.
