The surveys will take place overnight from 11pm to 7am and will probably continue throughout the next week as well. New provincial legislation to take effect in November 2007 will require the University to redo its survey of asbestos-containing materials in buildings on the Glendon and Keele campuses. Inspection schedules will be sent to health and safety officers and Joint Health & Safety Committees in advance. Pinchin Environmental has been awarded the contract to undertake the survey, which began in July. The company has considerable expertise in the assessment of asbestos materials as well as regulations and processes associated with asbestos management and abatement. Surveys last between five and 30 minutes and will be conducted on a room-by-room, area-by-area basis. Small representative bulk samples will be taken using accepted sampling procedures that will prevent exposure to asbestos fibers.
